I have a flight from DFW to PHL and then connecting to a smaller airport after that. I have some things to take care of in PHL that cropped up after my ticket was purchased. Will an airline let me off or allow me to change my luggage tag to PHL? The whole flight is much more expensive than if I had only booked DFW to PHL so it is not like I am trying to scam the system.

Call the airline and change your itinerary or talk to the gate agent ahead of time. They can tag your bag appropriately. If you wait till you actually arrive, you will be out of luck--- the bags never make it inside the actual airport when they are being swapped from one plane to the other and they won't be able to identify which bag is yours. You probably will have to buy a new ticket from PHL to the smaller airport, or get alternate arrangments to your destination; don't expect a refund on the unused portion of your ticket. But you will at least have your bags!

Ditto what others have suggested, and one addition: If this could be a around trip value tag, and you leave the airplane in Chicago on the outbound leg, the return part of the value tag will immediately be canceled - devoid of refund and no credit to you. you will no longer have the skill to get on the return leg in Chicago using fact the value tag will now no longer be valid. i think of you're extra useful off in all information on a thank you to easily purchase a value tag that is going manhattan to Chicago. Edit: The airline does not somewhat care approximately why you probably did no longer board the Chicago to Cleveland leg (i assume they might forgive you in case you died jointly as waiting for the connecting flight - yet i does not anticipate even that!) - they'll cancel the value tag besides.

When checking in your luggage, let the staff know where you want to pick up the luggage. You need not check it through all the way to your final destination.

Usually when you have a connecting flight, you are required to claim your luggage and then recheck it.
