A torrent is a stream of a shared file.

For example, let's say a person has a file of a movie they want to share with other people, they put this file on the network, --other people search for this specific file on torrent search engines and sharing websites.

The person who is originally sharing this file is called a seeder because they are seeding the file to other people, the people who are downloading this file from that person are called leeches. Ideally what should happen is that once a person downloads that file completely, they also become seeders themselves, sharing that file with multiple people. The idea is that the more people that are seeding the files you want, the easier and faster it will be for you to download it because you are downloading multiple parts of that file from multiple people at the same time. The more it's shared the greater the chances of finding that file and finding a good transfer speed.

It's got many great practical uses, and not all of them being illegal (because it's possible to download entire albums of music instead of simply individual songs like this.) People in the linux community who like to put out distributinons of their software which can be into the hundreds of megabytes or even gigabytes put these files out to torrent, so that the distribution of this software can go to many people, quickly, and efficiently.

And this saves webmasters tons of money because they aren't paying for the massive bandwidth costs that it would take to send a gigabtye file to millions of users, the Torrent distributes that bandwith across all it's users in the network.

A "Torrent file" has information for a "Torrent client" to know where to download stuff.

There are many clients. I've been using Azeureus for a year now and very satisfied. Once installed, you can go to places like http://www.torrentspy.com to get torrent files.

When you open the torrent file, the torrent client will connect to other torrent clients and the thing you selected will download onto your computer.

you use a program that fetches bits of a piece of data from different computers, it is pretty popular with some peeps, I tried it and wasn't very satisfied with the results, it can take days to download a complete file. there are bit torrent servers that assemble the header file that you download and load into your bit torrent fetcher. it is suppose to be harder to prosecute someone for fetching or serving the data because it is broken up and placed on several machine unlike peer to peer where the whole file resides on one machine. news groups are the way to go, forget bit torrent or peer to peer. get into news groups. every thing is in the news groups, you can e-mail me and I will tell ya how to get started in them if you don't know about them. there are servers out there that will provide you with the bit torrent plugins that contain information about files you want to retrieve. they usually make you join and charge you a fee, there is plenty of free providors out there also. it's good just for the knowledge to find out about them. usenet servers have evolved from the earlier days of news groups. and not very many peeps know about them or how to use them, the word "news" usually turns them off, it is much more than news.

I use Utorrent. Search "Brian's bittorrent" and prepare to read. It can be used for illegal activity but also legal stuff too. For instance the I download Knoppix, a live dvd of the operating system Linux.

I wouldn't use Bitlord or Bitcomet they are leeching programs and like others I knock off anyone using them from my uploads. Using Azureus or Utorrent you can go to a site such as torrentspy select a file to download and hopefully it will start downloading

It isn't wise to use it as it contains spyware to upload information about you to the internet. There are many alternatives.
