Like others have said YES! Especially after Katrina, when infected dogs moved all over the country. Places who had very few heartworm positive dogs are now seeing large numbers of positive dogs. If there is even 1 mosquito in your area, then your animals are at risk. The more mosquitoes, and the more positive animals in your area, the higher the risk.

If there are mosquitoes in New York, which I'm sure there are, then yes that dogs are at risk. Now the risk may not be as great as a dog living in the Louisiana swamp, but still a risk.

Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a fairly large worm (up to 14 inches long) that, in adulthood, lives in the heart and pulmonary arteries of an infected dog. Dogs aquire this infection through mosquito bites as mosquitoes readily pick up larval heartworms from infected dogs and carry them to new dogs.

All dogs are at risk. Where there are mosquitos, there is a chance of heartworm.

Before you put your dog on heartworm preventive (Intercepter or Heartguard), you will need to get a blood test to make sure they are clear of heartworm. If you put them on these meds with out the bloodwork done, then you risk killing your dog!!!

Only buy Heartworm protection from your vet or a name brand that is recomennded by your vet. Store bought flea and heartworm stuff can SERIOUSLY HARM your animal!!!!!
