if you go to a popular one like download.com, you'll notice that it's shareware, and not the full version. By them making shareware available to the masses, it's like doing avertising for Software vendors.

different ways but some do spyware some sell you the full version later if you liked the demo/free version, some are beta meaning they are just testing it. and by advertising on their sites theres more but thats all i got off the top of my head right now.

most of the site are promoted by the software who are companies that publish manual , books and sell t-shirts and stuff like that, if it is a site not sponsored by this companies , they usually make money out of adver.
