My dog is also 9, but for his breed that is about middle aged. It seemed as he got older he had to go pee more and more. Now we take him out about 4 or 5 times a day because he has to go pee. Or possibly your dog has forgotten about being potty trained. I don't know if that can actually happen, but humans seem to do that. If I were you, I would try to re potty train him. In the mean time they do sell doggy dipars.....I don't know if that will help or not. I hope that I was a help to you and I really really really hope that you get to keep your dog.

I understand the "not wanting to put down". I just had my shepherd of 11 years put down for about the same problem. It wasn't that he was hiking his leg and going all the time, he was just going, leaving zigzag lines of urine on the way. It was signs of failure and vet said it was time to let him go. It hurts so bad still, but with his bad hips it was hard for him to get up and go. He had starts of cataracts too. A lot against him, I loved him so much but he was suffering. Have you talked to your vet about it. You say he is old for his breed, but maybe you are lucky and it might just be an infection. If not, and vet says he needs to go like you mom, be with him till the end.

If the dog's been doing it for a while, it's probably just a bad habit now. Try wrapping something around his waist (lika an ace bandage, but not too tight.) That way, when he pees, he'll be all wet. It's kind of like potty training a baby, I guess. This worked for my dog!

My dog also had this problem. A couple of days after the peeing problem, he started licking himself constantly and then started throwing up. It turned out to be kidney stones. Has the dog been feeling sick? Please take him to the vet right away.
