My dad was born with the last name Gonzalez. But when he was in high school he said he just felt like writing it like this, Gonzales with an S. For no reason! Duh nobody just does that to there name like that for no reason. So know i am in high school and my last name is Gonzales! Ahh but the rest of my family's name is spelt with a Z! Why?

you still a Gonzalez.
because your birth certificate must be with a Z. (according to your dad's real last name)
unless he legally change his name

It seems as though you feel a little anger at your dad for doing this- almost like you feel he was ashamed of the way it was and so he changed it a little bit to make it "more English" or something. Almost like he was trying to deny his heritage.

The key thing to remember is this:
I am sure he did it for a reason (we as humans do everything for a reason). Ask him about it, express how you feel about it and try to get the answer from him.

It could be as simple as when I was in high school, I didn't like being "Joey" any more so I changed everything to "Joseph". Or it could be something more personal for your dad.

I will not tell you that it is no big deal, because obviously it is a big deal, otherwise you would not have posted the question. I suggest though that you speak to your dad about it (or any family member that might have the answer).

Good luck to you-- I know it is important to find answers about our heritage, and it bugs us when we notice a different spelling of a name or some other piece that is "out of place". Search out the truth, and remember to seek the truth, but not to let it bother you to the point it interferes with your life (such as studies, etc.).

I missed it...Gonsales? Oh, there it is- Gonzales not Gonzalez. Maybe your dad is distancing himself from some of the other members of his family. If this is the worst thing in your life, be very happy. Correct it if you want, or don't. It makes very little difference to who you are.

That is funny. I don't know why your dad would do that but it looks as if he got away with it.

My sister tried something similar (with her first name) in elementary school, but as soon as my parents saw papers with the other name on them, they went to school and got it straightened out. The school office, of course had her original name.

Check your birth certificate. However it is listed there will be your legal name unless you change it. What your father did was give himself an alias (from a legal standpoint).

If I were you, I would spell it the right way. Unless you're a Daddy's Girl, (like me) and you do it just to make him happy. If not, spell it the way you want!

Your father and mother are allowed to do things without your permission or approval just like you will do things that they will wonder about too. Respect your parents always, they don't need to answer to you. ; )

Does it really matter? You're name has stayed the same your whole life. Get over it.

maybe someone made a mistake with the skool papers... cuz however you spell your name in skool... thats how your teachers would get it in their skool record.. that the name they would call you , when you say '' here'' or absent'' ( when the teacher is taking the attendance)
