Actually, it's a modern day permutation of an old English saying. Knippers were in fact tools made to cut through chain mail in medieval times. As glass fabrication became more important, tools were neede to fit custom made pieces into the intricacies of the house of the aristocracy. Some brilliant guy found a pair of knippers that worked great and a new phrase came into being. Obviously, it is now a pun. Thanks for reading-I just made level 3.

Glass cutters are traditionally made from diamond which scores the glass to make a small line which can be used to break the glass cleanly. So it is just saying that the nipples are as hard as diamonds.

I think it's supposed to mean that the nipples are as hard as diamonds, since that is what is usually used to cut glass.
As for origin -- no idea... although it may be just one of those folk sayings that don't even have a distinct origin.

Never heard that one. Heard of nipples like a JCB starter button or nipples like wheel nuts!
