Hi.

Water towers have several purposes, besides the obvious role as a canvas for spray-can-toting artistic youths.

First, they store water, so the water company can handle peak demands without running short.

Second, they are used to increase water pressure. Water is pumped up to the water tower, and gravity creates the "water pressure" that pushes it through your pipes.. Tall buildings often have tanks on the roof or in maintenance floors for this same purpose, because the water company doesn't provide enough "water pressure" to reach above the .. (I'm pretty sure this is right) 5th floor in most cases.

Storing water. Sometimes for a town's water supply; sometimes for fire fighting.

Mainly storage so if there's a fire, you have enough water to fight the fire and still have pumps that can keep the pressure up for regular use.

they keep the pressure up so that when you turn on your faucet the water comes out. otherwise the water would just run down hill and not up in to the faucet.
