When I need to drop a few pounds, I usually start recording everything at http://www.fitday.com. It does make me aware and accountable for everything I do. Keeping a journal does increase the likelihood of one being on a successful diet / fitness plan.
However, I don't do it every day, it's a lot of work. I do keep a journal for the amount of running I do. It's the most important and only takes a little bit of time each evening.

I took on a food journal at the urging of friends and a nutritionist. I have steadily been gaining 5 lbs. per year since I was 22 (I'm 160) now. All that it taught me was that I make EXCELLENT choices in what I eat. If you looked at my journal--you would think I was skinny. But i never wrote down portion size. So, you should right that down (if you can) and keep you portions small and maybe it will help. I am still trying.. 2 months and haven't lost a pound.

i keep a journal, but i also have to list what time i ate and what kind of mood i was in and if i could have eaten something better. the journal helps when you look back at it you can see why you eating and how you can improve. for examole if you ate when you are upset, sad or nervous etc. you figure out what triggers you and try to fix it.

I used to years ago.I'd always make them on Microsoft Word with spaces for work out reps, sets and duration including an area to write how you felt both before and after the work out.You can do the same thing with a food journal. They both help you to track what worked and what didn't work.As well as teaching you good habits.Eventually you won't need the journal.Just make them up on Word and print a bunch out.Keep them in a folder. It's wat cheaper than buying them.

I have and I was surprised to see how much "snacking" I did throughout my day...
My nutritionalist suggested that in addition to writing down the foods I ate, that I start writing their calories as well, then totaling the calories at night...WOW..they add up fast for a 1200 calorie diet

I do. Always have always will, helps keep me in touch with my body, plus keeps me really aware of what has best effects, worst effects and no effects. I can see when my routine is getting stale, and I can plan a great cheat day and know exactly how far out I can go!
Good luck.
