i always thought that it was better to work out for a full hour or hour and a half, like it would be more effective. recently i've heard some research about splitting up the exercise routine and making two - 30 min workouts. would this be as effective?

I really depends on what kind of exercises you are talking about.

An hour or hour and a half may be somewhat long for resistance/weight training. Generally, your muscles tire when doing weight training more than an hour and the muscle building effect also wanes. You should limit your self to an hour max per day for weight training.

For cardiovascular exercise, I would recommend at least 15 minute intervals. The shorter the intervals..the higher the intensity you have to have to challenge the body and burn significant calories. Although, if you are doing cardio for 30 minutes to an hour I would alternate intensity to shock your body and get more out of it.

To answer your question, two 30 minute workouts are fine for weight or cardio workouts. In fact, it may make your body fresher for each of the workouts. It will also probably fit better into your schedule.

Yes, actually the two 30-minute workouts is probably more practical. At a certain point your muscles fatigue, so 1-1/2 hours may be too much.

20 minutes twice a day, once in the morning before you eat and then again in the afternoon or night. This will raise your metabolism and give your body the rest it needs.
