I wouldn't go for six, that's for sure. Did you get to hold, play with and brush or comb them? In my experience as an adoption counselor at a shelter cats seem to pick out the owner they want and often cat and human hit it off instantly.

So before you make a decision I would try to relate to a cat for some time. Some cats have to be adopted in pairs, or even in threes (though that's rare). If two cats are in the same cage and get along with one another then that would be a good choice.

Two is about enough for a start on a cat family.

Adopt one! Or two....or three:) We got our new kitty from PetSmart....a week ago today:) She's been wonderful. We had two other females in mind, so we spent a little time with each one. Lotus stood on my legs and let us pet her....the other two kept fidgeting and trying to get away. That was how I knew. You'll feel a certain connection with the one (or oneS) you're supposed to get.

And by the way, there's absolutely nothing wrong with adopting an adult cat, even if you've never had one before. Many people (myself included) think they're much easier than kittens. You already know what their personality is before you bring them home, AND they have a harder time finding homes than kittens do.

Please don't buy from a pet store. They usually get their animals from puppy and kitten mills where the breeding and housing conditions are terrible. And buying kittens to "rescue" them only keeps those nasty mills in business.

It happens to me every time I see kittens I want to bring them home with me, but you have to think about How many cats can you handle at the same time. What I do now is, I go to the stray facility near my home and donate food, carriers, litter, things like that and every time I go there I spend some time with them, I pet them and play with them, it makes me feel better, and I forget about getting any more, I already have 3 and believe me they are a hand full, specially keeping the house clean, but I love them and I know that if I had more I could probably not pay the same attention to each of them. So I'd say if you already have a cat, getting another one won't hurt but don't get too many, I am sure there will people out there who will adopt them.

Yay for adopting! Me & my husband recently adopted two kittens too. We went to a local SPCA first but didn't really like any of the kittens there. We ended up finding a non-profit adoption place and instantly fell in love with two kittens. Definately take some time with the cat before you adopt...just to make sure you two will get along. Cats have interesting personalities and so its important to find one that matches your personality as well. Good luck!

I would go spend time with them and see which ones have the personality you like the best. When I adopted my cats it was a two for one special. Sometimes they have a preference on which cats need to stay together so find that out before you get too attached.

I always look for the ones that seem most interested in me because I like interactive animals.

The younger they are the stronger your bond will be, but you also have to work harder on potty training and maintaining them until they get older. Sometimes the older ones are more independent it. This is not true in all cases but it seems to have been in mine.

make sure you have the time, space and money to properly care for the cat(s) before you go and get one or more.

Do you have the time to spend with each cat to play with them and give them the love and attention that they need.

Do you have the space? do you live in an apartment if so do they alow cats if so do they say how many cats you can have if not look at how big your apartment is, would there be enough space for the cat(s) to run around and play safely. if you live in a house how big is the house, is there enough room for more than one cat to run around safely in or just enough space for one.

do you have the money? cats can get expencive. you need a litter box, litter, food, toys, scratch posts etc. then you factor in vet visits and do you have enough money that you would be able to take your cat to the vet if it gets sick or injured. make sure you have the extra money for at least 1-2 un planned office visits. and make sure you find a good vet and establish with them so if bad times do come you can take your cat(s) there and they will feel confident with you enough to let you pay on a payment plan.

think about all those things and then decide if you can take on one or maybe two cats. Please if you do get a cat or cats DO NOT LET THEM OUTSIDE! most shelters have a stipulation in the contract not to let your cat outside.

Good luck and I hope that you will be able to return and get at least one cat

I would suggest you find out if where you live allows pets. If they do, you have several options: buy a kitten from a pet store, got to the animal shelter and select one, or watch your local free papers and look for individuals giving away kittens. Don't start with an adult cat if you haven't had one before. You don't own cats, they own you. I have approximatly 30 on my farm.

Spend some times with each of the kitties, and find the one that picks you -- I can't explain it, but you'll know it when it happens. You'll feel an extra connection with at least one of them...
