Well, I just got out of rehab and they called this a "gateway drug" Most people consider pot, and alcohol gateway drugs. You start out slow, just using on the weekends with some friends, and then you find yourself not getting the same buzz anymore so you move on to hard stuff. Like say I started out using just a few vicodin here and there, eventually I would build up a tolerance and it would feel the same to me. So I'd move on to some Percocet, etc etc, then Oxy Contin, etc etc, and eventually heroin. This theory isn't always true, but in my case it was.

non-existant. There is no such thing as a gateway drug.

Does beer lead to drinking "harder" alcohol? Is beer a gateway drink?

And what are "harder" drugs? LSD is not a stronger version of marijuana. It is different.

Gateway drugs, most commonly are alcohol and marijuana. I don't really believe this to be true, but I guess everyone is different
