i dont know what legal age it is in NY but age is only a number if your children are not grown up enough. their maturity even at 16 could be to young as another child can do it at 12. maturity isnt rated by being goofy or amount of laughter or even if the child gets into trouble, its about doing what is right even if its not fun. try testing your child by giving him/her tasks, a fun task you know will take a long time and a couple hard tasks but will get done quicker, tell the child you really need the hardest things done by the time you get back or before you wake up from an hour long nap or your done moving the grass ( what ever as long as the child is alone to free choose) imaturity says theyl do the fun task first and not comlete the hardest. this isnt the only time you should test the maturity and not the only way as you are trying to prepare them to become adults by the time they leave home not after they leave home.... good luck

I asked people here on the job what they knew about this question and the consensus was:

If they are 11 and 12, you can leave them for a few hours alone and 13 and up, you can leave them alone all day.

Leaving your toddler at house is in no way rather a sturdy thought, exceedingly in a extensive city. while you're working lots faraway from abode and could't locate the money for toddler care it would be greater clever to stay someplace else, someplace safer. finding a house in a safer section could be a tough decision, yet frequently a sturdy one.

Is the kid mature enough to handle a emergency that could arise? How responsible and mature is the kid, that's what you need to take into account when leaving a kid. Starting age would be 15-16 no younger.

I don't think I would want to stay at home by myself if I lived in New York and I'm in my 20's.
