My 14 month old son is pooping constantly...about 4-8 poops diapers a day when we were used to 1, maybe 2, a day. They are very soft in consistency (sorry), and maybe 1 out of 10 times it'll be obvious diarrhea. He gets horrible diaper rash off and on b/c of this. His pedi said that he either has a persistent intestinal virus or he has this unexplained Todders Diarrhea. She took him off of all dairy and I haven't noticed much of a difference. We're on week 3 of this poop saga. Please, help, if you've experienced this before. Thanks in advance.

Teething causes it because they swallow so much drool. It waters down everything.
Diarrhea is important to watch though because a child that age can become dehydrated quite fast (a few hours) if they don't replace the liquids they're loosing. So if he gets a regular virus on top of this (vomiting AND diarrhea) then watch him VERY carefully.
For diaper rash two or three warm baths with an oatmeal treatment (found in drugstores), and diaper rash cream can be prescribed by your doctor (better than the store bought crap) and try to keep him as dry as possible.
A note for the future: don't get 'used to' anything with kids. They change constantly!!
Good Luck

I did experience this with my son, from birth-6 months. He would poop about every 2 hours, and the pediatrician blamed it on me because I was breastfeeding. Once, I started feeding him table foods it slowed down. He is 14 mos old now and poops about 3-4 times a day, no matter what he eats. Just be sure to keep in touch with your doctor. Trust me, I know it can get costly (8-10 diapers a day, that 56-70 diapers a week), but just try to remember that it will subside. Just give it time and watch what you feed him. Good luck!!

My son was about that age I think when he started drinking soy milk not because of a dr. advice just because he liked it, but it gave him even worse diarrhea...so I went back to regular milk...I'm wondering...I bet the teething has something to do with it both kids had diarrhea when they were teething, I think the only advice I have because I'm a bum is keep pushing pedialyte, they have lollipops or popscicles don't they?? I'm so sorry--OH for the diaper rash use Monistat the yeast infection cream it takes it away in literally a matter of hours my son has had a bad rash lately from diarrhea as well (he's getting molars) and it works better than anything else.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Is it just the diarrhea, no other symptoms? The only time my kiddo ever got diarrhea from teething was when she was working on the molars, but that can be a side effect. I think its a good idea to take him off the milk for a little while, just don't forget that also includes yogurt and cheese and etc.
If it isn't bothering him to much, except for the sore bottom I woudln't worry to much about it, but if it gets worse, or if he starts losing weight I would take him back in to the doctors.
I hope he is starts feeling better, poor guy

Is your son on table foods or stage 3 baby foods? My daughter is also 14 months. At her 12 month check up I asked her pediatrician about moving up from stage 2 to stage 3 baby foods. She said I could go right to table foods. The problem is that I work full time and don't always have the time to prepare healthy dishes for her. It's hard enough trying to get my husband and I fed, so baby food is more convenient. Also she was still getting use to textures and gagging on anything that wasn't soupy, so we decided to give her stage 3 and gradually add in table foods.
A couple of weeks went by and she started to develop a horrible diaper rash. She has an average of 4 dirty diapers a day (up from 2 before she turned 1 year). Some have been diarrhea, but most just loose. Her pediatrician said the diaper rash was due to the acids in her stool against her skin, most likely caused by sugar in her diet from juice. I never give her more than 4 oz a day and it's usually watered down. I only give her Gerber baby juices too. I cut out the juice completely for 3 weeks and cut out any sugar treats, like pudding and ice cream, but it hasn't made much of a difference. Her pediatrician said not to use baby wipes (used them for a year on her with no problems before this), but wash her bottom with soap and water and then use zinc oxide (Desitin, Balmex, etc...). I use the disposable baby washcloths to clean her and use my own recipe of a layer of A&D ointment, then a layer of Desitin, and then baby powder. I had never used baby powder until now, but it seems to help absorb some of the wetness in the poop to keep it from sticking to her skin so much.
As for the cause, I still don't know. My sister claims her son had the same terrible rash when he was teething. He only got 4 teeth during his first year and then they all just started coming in at once. My daughter has been getting her back molars for the past 2 months, which could explain it, but my mother and I are wondering if it could be from the stage 3 baby foods. I am trying to give her more table foods now that her back teeth are coming in to see if it helps, but it's too soon to tell. I have been giving her cheese too because she loves it and I am hoping it will bind her up enough to get more solid stools.
If your son's pediatrician thinks it's an intestinal virus, can he take any antibiotics to treat it? It would be nice if they could just test for allergies. I asked my daughter's pediatrician, but she said it wasn't allergies.
I don't know if any of this has helped you. I can't wait to read some of the responses though. Try washing with the disposable washcloths and the combination of creams & powders to see if it at least helps his diaper rash. Good luck - I know how frustrating it is!

Diarrhea is very common during teething. Try drying out his system with constipaing foods.
Examples of constipating foods are milk, ice cream, cheese, yogurt, and cooked carrots.
Avoid fruit juices entirely. They can cause diarrhea and also acidify the system and cause diaper rash.
Increase bran. Bran is an excellent natural stool softener because it has a high fibre content but the fibre will help to dry the stool also.. Make sure that your child's daily diet includes a source of bran, such as one of the "natural" cereals, unmilled bran, bran flakes, bran muffins, shredded wheat, graham crackers, oatmeal, high-fibre cookies, brown rice, or whole wheat bread.
Good luck and remember only a year or so to potty-training!

My daughter has had this happening on and off. Shes 20 months old. I found that just trying to push bananas and rice and other "binding foods" didnt help too much but sort of put my mind at ease. Her diaper rashes ended up turning to yeast infections requiring prescription cream.
While the weather is warm enough, let him run around naked or put training undies (cotton ones) on him to let his bottom air out that should help the rash some.
But i totally kno the pain you're going thru!

My little girl had diarrhea and soft stools every time she cut another tooth. So maybe since he is cutting 2 at the same time it is just worse on him. If it doesn't get any better soon, you may want to think about taking him to another doctor. Also, for the diaper rash if you can find it Boudreaux's Butt Paste is awsome for bad diaper rash.

He's teething. My son did the same thing when he cut his bottom teeth. I don't know why or how it causes it, but I bet anything it's teething. The docs will tell you it's not, they told me the same thing, but I still think that's what it was. And it wasn't regular poopy smell either. (yah i know that's gross, but it's to help this poor mom.) I hope that's all that is wrong him. I'm sure he will be fine. Keep lots of fluid in him so he won't dehydrate though. Good luck.
