But Natures Miracle or Outright. To get the odor out you will have to soak the carpet down to the padding. Sometimes you will have to pull up the carpet if the odor is on the floor under the carpet and padding. Good luck!

Before you worry about the smell, get the dog to stop peeing in the house. You have to monitor a new dog 24/7 as long as he's in the house. I know you'll say "I cant watch him constantly" then you need to put him outside when you cannot keep a constant eye on him. If and when you have that issue resolved and hopefully you'll start now to clean the house, get a product at your local Wal-mart or Target, that removes animal urine smell. Dont think you will get out large puddles or frequently used spots with simple carpet cleaner or even a home carpet shampooer. You have have to have the carpets professionally shampooed. The smell will have seeped into the carpet bad and possible the floor underneath. If the method's above do not work, you need to replace the carpets, use lot's of fabreeze on other fabrics that may be locking in the odor. Just like cigareete smoke can be smelled on clothes when the person isnt smoking this smell can be in your clothes, sofa, linens, curtains, etc.

I renovate houses for a living - and we see this sometimes. This is what I would do. Take up the carpet (I know its a pain in the rear, but keep reading). Look for the spots in the padding where he peed. If you can't see it, lift up the padding and look under it - you should be able to see circular spots. Cut these spots out of the padding, and replace with fresh padding (taped with duct tape). Treat the floor underneath and the spot(s) on the carpet above the pad, with an enzyme. Let it soak for quite some time. As an added precaution, I would then shampoo the whole rug with a bit of enzyme. Then I would spray the spots you treated with "NO" or something of that nature that you buy at the pet store. And keep a very close watch on him for a while to see if he's sniffing at any particular spot - just to make sure you got it all.
If this doesn't work, I hate to say it, but you'll need to replace the pad. Treat the floor underneath with an enzyme. If necessary, repaint the baseboards where he peed (with KILZ first, then the paint). Keep at it and eventually you'll get it all out. Good luck.

With a dog that big you will probably need to remove all of the carpet and padding from the house and deodorize the subflooring and if that's wood it may need to be removed too. If you just deodorize or clean the carpet you will clean the surface but the odor will still be there and will resurface eventually. You may want to check with a vet to make sure that the dog doesn't have any urinary tract issues going on and also ask if the vet has any ideas. Otherwise, there are a few things you can do - hire a dog walker to come mid-day, crate the dog (make sure that the crate is big enough), confine the dog to a small safe room, limit the availability of water during the day and walk him right after he drinks. I'd check with a dog trainer too to see if there's a method to help him better control his functions.

Everyday cleaners aren't going to cut it for animal urine.
You need to use a cleaner specifically made for dog urine and feces, preferably one that is enzymatic. If you go to any specialty pet store, you will find products there called Natures Miracle, Simple Solution, and PetZyme. All of these are enzymatic stain and odor removers specifically made for cat and dog urine and feces.
Since these products are enzymatic, they are going to interact with the enzymes in the urine that cause the stain and smell, effectively eliminating them.
Since dogs will continue to urinate on anything that already smells of urine, you need to get rid of the scent completely. Use a black light bulb to find the areas on the carpet that have been urinated on (those areas will show up as a bright pink/purple under the light). Completely soak these areas with one of the solutions, including the carpet pad if the urine went down that far. As the solution dries, it will work with the enzymes of the urine to eliminate stain and odor. You may need to do this several times over several days in order to be sure you get all of the scent.
With the scent removed, this will hopefully help deter your dog from urinating in the same areas, but there could be other reasons as to why he's peeing in the house in the first place. Since he wasn't urinating in the house in the first place, he could have developed a urinary tract infection recently that is causing him to be unable to hold it as long as usual. This would lead him to urinate in the house when he can no longer hold it any longer. Call your vet and see if you can bring in a urine sample.
The dog could also be relapsing into the state of mind he was in while at the shelter. Typically those dogs don't get to spend a lot of time outdoors, and they learn that it's acceptable using the restroom indoors because of it.
As a trainer, I believe that your best solution is going to be to crate train your dog so that he is in his crate whenever you are unable to keep an eye on him. This is a safe, humane way of teaching your dog that the only acceptable place to use the restroom is outside. Petsmart carries crate training booklets for a reasonable price that help you through the process step by step. You could also speak with a local trainer for more assistance.
Feel free to email me and I'll toss you a copy of my personal crate training steps (they're too long to post in here!).
Hope it helps.

Either have a professional come in and clean the carpets or rent a carpet cleaner and do it yourself. That is probably the best and fastest way to clean the whole carpet.

repeatedly I see people mentioning febreze as answers to this. Febreze does not neutralize the odor. It may prevent us from smelling it, but the dog will still smell it and know that it is there. You need an enzyme cleaner specifically made for urine. A good one is Nature's Miracle.

Try this product called "Urine Gone" it comes with a black light so you can see all the spots to be treated. You just spray it on and thats it. It works. I've used it for a bed wetter I used to take care of, it worked on that and on the pet's accidents too. Not expensive. Can get at stores

Clean the carpet. Then make sure all the urine is out of it. You can get some fabreeze cleaner, and do it again. That was the only thin that worked for me.
