swimming is a great workout and it is very low impact at the same time.

Lay flat on your back with a pillow under your low back. Raise your knees to your chest. This will strengthen your back muscles. You can also sit your knees under your body and with your hand outstretched, lean into your hand, on both sides. Anything that can stretch your back muscles without causing pain will make the muscles stronger. When the muscles are stronger, you can graduate to more safe aerobics. Don't try aerobics until your back is better. Avoid a lot of sitting as well. If you can bend and touch your toes, it will also stretch your muscles. Its okay to bend your knees while touching your toes. Wouldn't want to make you back pain worse.

The first four answers were great but don't give up on running. I had back surgery in 1986 for a disk and quit running for several years out of fear. When I started back, I was fitted for the proper type of shoe for my stride and compete in several races a year. (I'd do more but I also compete in softball and other sports.)

Swimming is very safe on your body as a whole. It is recommend when people have many different kinds of injuries. There's plenty of resistance, but no fast jaring movemets that could cause more injury.

Water based exercises. That will build up some muscles, strength, then you can go walking or jogging. Good luck.
