going on a Christian religion standpoint because I have been there before, it is because science is anti-Biblical, according to some (but not all--please don't include me in that group!) Christians. However, if you know certain things about the Bible that are not very obvious mostly due to translation/language barriers (ie, the account of creation is written in POETIC style in Hebrew, whereas none of the rest of Genesis is, and therefore many elements could be symbolic and not supposed to be taken as literal fact at all), these scientific things are not at all anti-Biblical, and those that are REALLY DON'T MATTER, because it is so small.
The Bible is a religious book, not a science book, but many people try to make it the "one size fits all book" and try to turn it into a: science book, history book, psychology book, religious book, etc. When evidence comes up that contradicts the Bible, it threatens people's belief system. If they are wrong about there being 100 people at a place and not 101, what else are they wrong on? So instead of being threatened, they build a wall around themselves and say "You just have to have faith. The devil uses many tools to try to get us to turn away from God." Thus, science becomes a tool of the devil and is very much despised.

I don't hate science I just think much of it is silly and leads people in the wrong direction. Lets be honest, your talking about evolution and it's friend the origin of man and others similar theories.
Science has come a little way sense Darwin's time, Darwin was not a fool, he new that evolution could not produce irreducibly complex machines which we now know are in our own bodies.
Darwin had no idea about DNA, codes that build amino acids, cilium which used multiple parts to remove particles from our throats, their are many things Darwin never could have imagined.
Our universe was created to perfection, not by accident or by multiple changes over enormous lengths of time. Our universe was created by God, not just some intelligent designer God is the intelligent designer.
God created you with the simplest cells in your body being more complex than the complete infrastructure of New York City.
Then he loved you enough to die for you.
We don't despise science we just would rather have wisdom than mans intelligence.

Science do not accept religion, due to their need to explain natural causes to people that do not believe in a higher power, and also due to the fact that we cannot explain or understand the reason why God does certain things so instead of living based on pure speculation about certain things, man chooses to believe in science. Since God had used a lot of mathematical calculations when he created the universe. Most things that scientists tries to proves based on those calculations are pretty accurate.
So religion do not despise science, because scientist are in other words proving that God gave them the intelligence and the conprehension to understand such amazing things.

I think they fear more the faith that people put in science. They don't see science as their ultimate truth and who could blame them? Science is so fickle. One day the universe is timeless and infinite. The next day it's expanding and finite. And now they are considering making it timeless and infinite again. Mean while people are living and dying. If we have to wait for science to finally come to the conclusion that God does indeed exist then so many lives will be lost.
On top of that there is emerging a more and more constant scientific bias. Take global warming for example. Depending on who you ask they will either tell you that scientist have proven that global warming is happening and it's caused by our actions. You talk to the next guy and he'll say the scientist have proven that global warming is naturally occurring or isn't occurring at all.
In short science has become relative to the observer (quantum mechanics is an excellent manifestation of that). Now the vast majority of scientist have a bias towards God. If they set out on a mission to prove God doesn't exist well then they are going to come up with some pretty hairy "proofs" on why He doesn't exist.
This completely destroys even the idea of a non-biased objective view of science. If what we know as science isn't objective then what really is?
Finally it comes down to a choice. You can either choose to open your mind up to a belief in God or you can close it down and say He doesn't exist.

Probably because science has rigorous standards and eliminates all variables and bias in order to seek truth.
Religion does not. It embraces all variables as well as much bias to make a larger "kingdom," but the end result is a study, so to speak, that cannot stand up to scrutiny because it lacks truth.
I believe that the religious leaders know in their hearts that they are on shaky ground and are intimidated by science because it threatens their kingdoms of power and wealth.
They overcompensate by drilling it into their congregations to stand in faith and fight the good fight against the enemy (science).
I know when I was in the fundamentalist church, I heard it all the time about the evil evolutionists that were corrupting the world with their lies from the devil.....Pretty sick, huh?

i like how you added "some". i don't think religions inherently despise science. i think religions despise some of the theories that science comes up with.
science by nature is exploratory, and at least in the christian religion faith is emphasized. they are not mutually exclusive, but for some people it is a challenge to integrate both. but it can be done, of course. and it's not hard to either.

Because "Truth" and "Falsehood" cannot co-exist! The avalanche of lies that various religions present could be easily exposed by the light of truth that science brings! Thus is it any surprise that religion despises science the way darkness despises light?

Couldn't tell you. My religion, Roman Catholicism, doesn't despise science at all. It has always regarded science as an outstanding gift.
That's why it's irritating to read all of these "science vs. religion" scenarios painted about the Church and Galileo.
There's so much misinformation out there about the "Galileo affair." People have come to believe things about this situation that just aren't so.
For instance, they've come to believe that Galileo's theories conflicted with Church doctrine. That's not so, because the Church has no doctrines about scientific affairs -- only about theological and moral ones.
Galileo's problems with the Church, and vice versa, went alot deeper than this supposed "science vs. religion" thing.

I have found that some people in different religions dislike science. because they either believe so strongly that they feel we should not question why. Others don't want to hear anything that may pop their perfect bubble they have created. They are afraid by just listening it will make them doubters of their faith.
I believe there are too many unanswered questions. I like to hear all sides and make up my own mind.

Science is incapable of accepting a non-material first cause. This is a basic limitation in the eyes of theists. It also leaves science with many unanswerable questions. What are ghosts? We have good data on them, but how can they exist? If ghosts DO exist, what does that imply about the possibility of other similar life forms? Could God be one of these? None of these questions can even be addressed by science.
