I am 100% in favor of the draft. Most countries already require this.
The reason I do favor this is that the youth of today need some discipline in their lives and many parents do not enforce that.
Another reason is that it will train today's youth in some form of career that they can use once they get out of the military. Not that combat soliders are needed in the civilian world but there are plenty of other skills a person can learn in the military, from medical to office to mechanics.
I also feel that a lot of youth would probably make a caree out of the military... it does have some good benefits associated with it.

It is never a time for a military draft!
Force the kings over there to spread out the power ant the wealth and make every effort to bring up the status of their least citizens and you see all the terrorism decay and vanish.
How bout we have the Oil powers over here serve some time after all they are capitalizing on all of it. I'm even suspicious they caused it. The reason that you think we need a draft is because the war is discovered to be somewhat fraudulent. If it was truly a just war their would be no problem pulling in volunteers.
Keep off the skyline, survive your time and ask Vietnam Veterans how to deal with life when you get home.

If the gov't does really start talking about a draft a lot more people will speak up against this war and they don't want that. So, they will most likely abuse the active duty and reserves as long as they can. I mean really, who'se going to speak up for them? Don't most civilians think that the military member deserves the abuse they get because they signed up?
The whole thing is just sickening. I was in the AF for 10 yrs and a month before I was due to get out they put me on hold. Even though I had already been in for 10 yrs, it was voluntary and for the most part fair. I had never felt as trapped as I did on that day. I can't completely imagine what it must feel like for the people who aren't being allowed to get out now.
***Hey JosephP, I agree w/ utilizing the reserves but you should know that they do not get the same benefits as active duty until they are activated.

Wow a year in Iraq and back.
My Uncle would have loved that during WWII. He was in the Pacific and when I asked him what was a tour of duty he said, from when you showed up till the end of the war, you got killed or got wounded bad enough to be taken off the line. The breaks you got were between Islands.
But I'll agree there needs to be a better plan.
Here's mine.
We tell the Iraqi parliment you take a vote. You want us to stay you say so. You want us to go, you say so. Majority rules and the votes by members will be published and broadcast. We'll do what YOU want.
Or we could put it to a vote by the people. Majority wins.

I agree. This country has gotten to the point of "Do it for me." It is sickening. I saw on CSPAN recruiters going to homes of wealthy people to talk to their children about joining the military, and people actually said "Our kind don't do that anymore". Yes we have an all volunteer proffesional army, but people don't see the real facts. They don't realize that most soldiers get sick of their job from day 1. And since this war has started their not letting these guys get out when their enlistment is up. That to me is cruel and unusual punishment!! Even in Vietnam and World War 2, when a troops enlistment was over, he went home!! This crap their doing today is plain wrong and UN-AMERICAN!! 2 and 3 tours not to mention what the future holds. Yea for officers and pogue MOS's in the military it isn't so bad, but for a front line troop to go through that much hell. SICKENING!! BRING BACK THE DRAFT!! Let ALL of our country pitch in!

I can not believe you all would destroy the military like that. The military is a professional group of volunteers. We should do what any company would do if we need more people, give better incentives.
No one has been pulled to serve that did not have a contract holding them to serve, but we had not used those contracts in years and everyone knew about them when they signed up.

Support the troops -- bring them home!!!!
I would only support the draft under the following minimal criterea:
1. No gender discrimination
2. No college exception
3. No way to buy your way out of the draft period.
In other words, scum like George W. Bush could not avoid service as he did in Vietnam.

Either that or up the pay and benefits and re-double the effort to recruit more volunteers.
Personally, I'm in favor of the latter approach.
If you think the partisan screaming is loud now, wait until we start drafting the Weak Sisters and their sons and, yes, their daughters, too!

I couldn't agree with you more. First, we are spread terribly thin and could not handle crisis in Iran, Lebanon, North Korea or your choice of other wars waiting to happen.
Secondly, if our defense is a national priority, it should be backed up by a national commitment. It's all too easy to send our men to war if they are an all volunteer, minority & lower income army. Yes, let the politicians feel the pain when their children and their rich constituents' children have to ship out also.

I some what agree. However, shouldn't we use our reserves? Outside wartime they just train. They still get paid, and have the same benefits as regular military. Why not use them? I don't like the idea to over use them. They shouldn't do any more than any one on active duty. If it gets to that point then, YES, start the draft.
