I think it all has to do with how mature a person is. I do know that I put alot of time and effort into answering some questions, and someone else will get the best answer because of different reasons which I think sucks also. When you get to level 2 then you can start to rate people's posts, hopefully that might start to take care of some of the people who just post " 2 points " or something, and you can always report a question if it seems like a joke. Good Luck and have faith that good people are out there. =)

Well, yes, I bet you are!
Of course, this site has several purposes, one of which is entertainment (notice the categories, many of them are just for fun).
As for abusiveness and irrelevance, there is an Abuse Report system. Click on the little flag widget for the question or answer that violates the Guidelines (some categories are "Insulting other participants" and "Not a question or answer" and "Epithets and slurs").
You go to a screen where you choose the type of abuse of the system, and type an explanation, or paste the offending material. An email is sent to a staffer who checks to see whether it really is an abuse. If so, it's removed and the abuser docked.
Those who are really horribly abusive or keep posting sludge are blocked from the system.
Use this system. It's the only way to keep the signal/noise ratio high.
There's an acronym that's developed from this: RAMO: Report And Move On. There will always be jerks, so don't let them get you down. Just RAMO.

Yes, it could be true that there are legitimate questions and there are definitely legitimate answers for those as well. And of course, there will be bullies, abusers, etc. But then that is equilibrium, you ask a stupid question, dont't bloody expect a serious answer. In real life, you won't get such deals, nor will you on Yahoo Anwers.
Equally, you are being naive, and moronic if you think you will be either getting all perfect answers, or make decisions based on answers here. It is FYI only. Learn to sieve through the informations first. Some are here for fun, informations, other just for entertainment. Life is not black or white.
And who are you to call others class room clowns? Check yourself and your language first...
The internet is open to all. Learn to take it as it comes and to sieve through the information, not make stupid general statements like that some wreck it for all. If you are hurt, blah blah, offended, that is veritably your bloody problem, not the answerers. Again, learn to sieve through the answers...
If you are don't know how to handle life and take it too seriously, that is again your problem. Not the worlds. You want a perfect world? it isn't here. learn to accept the other shades of colours, and stop being a prude....

It's a fair question and I feel your pain.
I think the key is to understanding what this site is all about. And it's mostly for entertainment.
There are not very many legit questions -- most are easily googled, pleas for homework help, cries for attention or playing the points game.
Since it's basically an entertainment site, we enjoy the wide range of questions. We like that some people pose questions that make us think or invite us to add commentary on our society.
And certainly there are people who are abusive and inflammatory.
We also enjoy the immediacy of the reponses. There must be thousands of people scanning through this site at any moment. Getting a quick response whether serious or silly is hugely satisfying.
The serious questions get some very serious answers. But at it's heart it's for entertainment ... there is no goal for archiving, for example.
Yahoo! Answers is like wikipeidia's bratty little brother.

Yahoo Answers has the real ability to be a helpful website. There are people here that have a tremendous amount of knowledge and information to share, but as always....there are a few bad apples who want to ruin it for everyone by asking questions intended to be inflammatory rather than helpful and replying with idiotic answers.
I totally agree that it is the point system that causes the bad behavior.

Thats the biggest problem with this site, is the nonsense we get.
I had a motherboard question that I had to delete a few times to finally get 'legimate' answers...
All I wanted was confirmation that what I was going to do was an aok step, instead I got b.s., opinions, and no facts.
But there are a ton of kids (mental and actual) on here so I guess we both have to put up with it somewhat.

I propose that the reward for writing the best answer gets 50 points instead of 10. That way people will take things more seriously.
But... you also have to take into account that this site is a FANTASTIC outlet for people to vent their opinions to the mass public. This site is quite like a highly organized chat room, and being productive is merely optional.

learning is what Y! answers is a ll about. what you are learning is about the kinds and types of ppl who use Y! answers. some vent, some rage, and some enjoy just stirring the pot, so to speak. oh well, such is life!
If you want straight answers to troubling or thought provoking questions may I suggest a reading group tailored to your issues of interest? You'll meet some nice, well informed, serious ppl in these groups. You'll also meet some not so very nice, not very informed, and not at all serious ppl too. Again, it's just life.

There are no stupid questions just stupid answers.
And I think this is a great spot for debate, fun and freindship and how can we get to the heart of the matters if we cannot discuss freely without judgment and fear?
i for one think its great, but as always with everything you have those who chose to complain rather than help build up.
Just persevere and stop whining.

In total agreement, except here we have numerous class clowns, if we band together and report them and not respond to their questions maybe they will either grow up or go away....
