Nice anwers there people.
From what I've heard just keep telling him no, and try putting something like vinegar, tabasco sauce, chili, or the stuff that you can buy from the pharmacy. Just keep redirecting him and hopefully that approach will work out for you. I hope you are able to kick this habit.

He'll outgrow it, eventually. He is afterall only 4. But if it bothers you that much, there's plenty of products out there to paint on his nails that is absolutely gross, or try aloe vera. If he wants to suck it bad enough though, he'll just suck on it anyway whether or not you do something to his thumb.

I had to keep yanking my daughters thumb out of her mouth and tell her big girls don't do that! Yuckie!! I had to keep on her and do it every time. You can also try this bitter stuff you paint on his thumb. You get it at the drug store. Finally she stopped! Best of luck with it!

Get that stuff at the drug store that's designed to deter kids from biting their fingernails with a horrible taste. Paint his fingernails with it. He will not want his thumb in his mouth.

pepper, chile, or anything like that will not work. trust me, my mom tried it when i was little. possibly bitter apple might work LOL. that stuff they use to prevent dogs from chewing. it tastes horrible. and it doesnt wash off as easily as pepper. -or- you can get a palatal crib installed to prevent him from sucking. its like a little fence that goes on the top of his upper palette. its painless but makes thumbsucking annoying. so he should stop

put vaseline on his thumbnails, when he goes to suck them the taste is bad and he will stop. Works well with biting nails too.
