As you can see by some of the idiotic and rude answers, Tourettes has gotten a bad rap. I am getting sick and tired of the jokes about this........

Now to answer your question. It affects about 1 in every 2000. Cases of Tourettes can range from mild to severe. Severe cases seem to be more rare. Daily life can become a challenge, depending on the severity of the tics. The tics are usually motor tics and/or vocal tremors.

Cussing only occurs in a very small number of cases and it is not a requirement for a diagnosis. Most TS sufferers NEVER display this symptom. This is the most misunderstood and, unfortunately, most well known symptom.

Tourettes is lifelong and there is not a cure. It is not degenerative. It is migratory (tics will change constantly). Tourettes does not impede intelligence or ability to learn. It is neurological. TS patient usually (not always) have TS plus other conditions (OCD, etc.)

Thanks for asking, I'm glad that you are endeavoring to educate yourself about this condition.

My graduating class had 3 with tourrettes out of 160. Must be something in the water. Only one of them was very noticeable. He was smart too, he just shook and blurted out sounds and words. Made me feel bad for him. I think his main problem from it was the reaction of others.

This term is a dumping ground for attention deficit disorder, autism, Aspergerber's and other diseases. A lot of children fall in these categories.
