Buffalo is closest, then Rochester and then Albany (all in NY - I don't know about the Canadian side).

The Canadian side is much, much better & less expensive. Turns a trip into a vacation. For a really lovely experience, away from the tour groups, check out Niagra-on-the-Lake. A charming town, Can't remember exactly. but I'd say between 30 to 45 minutes away.

We stayed in a great hotel in Granby, Ontario, just outside of Toronto. It was a Super 8, but was much better quality than you'd expect of that chain. It was brand new 3 years ago. Indoor swimming pool, eating places nearby.

Depends on what direction you are coming from. Try travelocity for accommodations in those cities.

YOU ARE NOT GIVING US ALL THE INFORMATION,so it is hard to tell you where to go route 90 (thruway) is the key east west through NY state. There are any number of accommodations withing two hours. In either direction though I would go west/south out of Buffalo that is just me.

Canada is "cheaper" in US$$. Exchange is about 30+ cents less than $1.00 US. I don't have the current exchange.
Also, on anything purchased in Canada, you will be refunded sales tax. Keep receipts.
Unless you must stay in US.
Been there many times.
