I am starting an MSc this September and then am going straight onto my PhD next September. I will have gone straight through from being 4 to being 26 without a break from education at all! I am regretting not taking a gap year before uni, or a year after my 1st degree. However, I am not one to lament too much. I will have a month or two this time next year, and I want to send it doing some amazing things. I may be in line to be called dr, but I have no life experiences. My life is just study.

I need some ideas, and I want to plan this trip properly so it comes off. I have a feeling that if i don't have this to look forward to I will end up a bitter old woman working in a lab, or a lecturer that hates students! help help help!!!

Depends on your budget and how much comfort you require. You have a year to research so I suggest that every day you do a bit of web research on a different country. (Look at www.fco.gov.uk to find a list of the countries in the world) Some will be a no-no because of wars, famine, cost etc. but gradually you will build up an idea of what places appeal and what terrify.

Choose your country and then just go there for all the time you have. ENJOY.

See the USA. I would plan a trip as follows: Start in Baja, California and drive up the Pacific Coast all the way up through Washington State. Then though British Columbia (I know I said USA but what the heck it's magnificent) into Alaska and the Denali National Park, etc. Come back along the trans-Canada highway to Montana (Glacier National Park) and down through Wyoming and Yellowstone to Arizona and The Grand Canyon. Stop wherever and whenever the mood strikes. That's a trip!!

sara you didn't say if you wanted to travel abroad or in UK and with a friend or on your own so I will assume the latter, don't go to Africa as someone suggested to see the poverty and illness that prevails so much in the third world but get right away so that when you return your fresh to pick up and progress so I'm going to suggest try America and see as many states as possible by travelling by coach, I have travelled extensively around the world so when I say this was one of my best breaks 18 days I am really serious you will enjoy it as its so varied and to wind up spend about 4 days no more in Las Vegas and then get home you will have had a wonderful educated enjoyable holiday. My best wishes to you and keep safe, the Americans always give you a big welcome

over the past 50 years I have traveled a lot. If I were planning a great first time trip, I would include Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, Venice, Rome and Paris, France. Costly? yes...but the memories can never be taken away, and these cities are fabulous and do not have to be extremely expensive (unless you want to travel first class.) Every one of these cites have unique things to offer, and all of then have many many free attractions especially if you enjoy beauty and history. And although I mention History, these do not have to be "educational" but can be just enjoyable.

Go to Europe, that way you can visit the countries there. Bring a friend with, that way you can share it with someone. Maybe go to Australia or something to. I know if i had a chance i would go to those. Oh and don't schedule every single hour, cuz then you wont have to time have fun.. just think of something to do each day, and when you r done that go shopping or to a resturant or just a park. that way you can have time to enjoy it.
have fun=)

If you are studying to be a doctor of medecine, visit India or Africa and you will see some really sick people, in urgent need of medical attention that they can't afford and advice that they really don't want to hear.

Or if you feel like you haven't had much fun in your life, go to Ibiza or Florida and let your hair down.

Either option is a legitimate choice as we need fun as much as we need lessons.

Fly to Spain and then use public transport and a ferry into Morroco. It is a good trip with plenty of contrasts.
