They eat bugs and grubs and also small seeds. They need to feed once and hour. If you go to a good pet shop or garden centre with a pet centre in it, you may be able to find some egg biscuits. I am hand rearing a baby sparrow as we speak, and I am feeding him on Shaw's Egg Biscuits. You need to crumble half a biscuit up, and mix with a small amount of water so that it is like a paste. Then stuff this into a syringe, and encourage the bird to open its beak.

Squirt a small amount at the back of the beak, making sure that the tongue of the chickadee is on the lower part of the beak. Wait for about 15 seconds, then make sure that most of this food has gone before putting another lot in. Eventually the bird will learn to open it's beak by itself. Do this every hour.

Birds do eat a lot - their metabolism is very high. Baby birds also need to be fed very often because their digestive systems don't extract many nutrients from the food they eat. You should feed it what the mom would feed it - berries, small bugs, pieces of worm.

You need to go to a vet or quality pet store and get food for the baby. The mother bird would give the baby regurgitated seeds worms etc. There is a fairly inexpensive formula for them (almost a grit consistency) you will know they are full based on their gull (pouch on the throat) it is very easy once you get used to it. Be warned tho they are big eaters and will keep you quite busy.
