stronger muscles definitely help but you should be concentrating on a few other things that really get the ball out there - have you ever seen a little golfer (child, woman, man) who could really hit the ball? It's about using your entire body - a slow and low take away and a full shoulder turn is a good start - get your hips involved, a nice strong torque from the hips it what gets the ball out there - the key is to get your arms and your body in sync to deliver the strongest move possible through the ball - good luck

If your working out to improve your golf game work on all the muscle groups and keep yourself aliened I'm speaking about your back. Regardless of what people think you do use all the muscle during golf.
I'm 41 5'8" and hit 200 to 280yards on a drive. I use a Cobra 440 and tee up high, I get the loft and distance that way. I also keep my clubs very clean with the C.A.B. Cleaner that helps alittle. I carry a 6 handicap.

Fitness is great for any sport. But building muscle means very little in golf in regards to distance in my opinion. I average 300+ off the tee because of my timing and lower body (hips) quickness through the swing. I rarely if ever work out and I hit the ball ton.
Tempo, Timing, and a good solid golf swing will produce the yards... keep up the good fitness, but do not expect that to solve the problem. ;)

As you know, so much of the golf game is in the hips and waste. Most golfers at Division1 and Professional levels lift to maintain strength and not so much to increase it. Don't use to much weight but just enough to get a workout and enough where you can still do each workout correctly. Simple curls, bench, lat pulls, shoulders, lower back and sit ups will not only make you look good but maintain a good strength condition.
As far as hitting further, talk to a local pro or teacher, maybe increase the length of your driver or you might have to tweak your swing. Length adds to the downward motion, more head speed and as a result, longer drives.

Weights for distance, hmmm. Distance comes from proper contact and tempo, everything happening at one perfect time. New driver might help, or different ball.
I'm 51, 20 hdcp, 5'8" 130#, 180-200 yard drives with 5 wood. How much farther do you need to hit the ball. WOW 10 hdcp!! Come to Myrtle Beach and play golf with me!!! I am addicted.

You should target your core muscles like your abs and back and the other muscles in that area. That is where all your power will comes from, so if you aren't hitting very far make sure you are swinging with your whole body and not just your arms.
