Yes. I have a chocolate lab and she is very protective of me. She is only 8 months old and she is very well mannered until she thinks somone is trying to come in the house. She is extremely protective at night if I am in the bed. I always reward her for warning me of guests. She is great.

Yes/maybe. Being a good guard dog depends on the dog as much as the breed. If your lab is shy, then that will not work at all. Though I have never met a shy lab they are out there from what I hear. Also, hire a guard dog trainer that can help look at your dog or pick out a dog that seems to have all the right attitude to protect what is his/hers. Males are usually better at protecting, but females born to lead are even better than the males. Many labs hop around like they would not hurt a fly, truth be told labs have a dark side. I have witnessed in my own lab and in have heard many testomines were a lab can become extremely aggressive when they feel something they love is in trouble. (I have even seen two of them rip through a door to protect their owner and right after trouble was gone, they went back to being the loving, tail wagging buddies that they are.) Though a Retriever would not be my first choice as a guard dog it is possible. In truth, if you are in the market for a guard dog for a business or for your home, I would suggest a doberman.
Good Luck

Almost all dogs cannot be a guard dogs. That's way we import dogs from Europe. When you talk to most of people, who looking to buy guard/protection dogs, what they really want is watch dog. There are very different.
To answer your question. I saw just one Lab trained to be a guard dog. That was at the infinity K-9. He wasn't the best guard/protection dog I seen, but he was able to guard the object, bite on command, out on command. Just basic protection training. So the answer is Yes. If Lab has right temperament, he can be a guard dog. It's very rare thought.

Almost any dog can be a guard dog. The problem though is unless you are going to have your dog professionally trained as a guard it can become aggressive towards anyone, even you. Most dogs will bark at anyone entering their territory (i.e. your house or yard) even if it's not a threatening bark just a "Hi, how's it going?" bark. If you are going to attempt to train the dog yourself remember to always be the alpha dog. Don't let the dog do ANYthing that you didn't tell it to do first. If not, it will just get out of control and that's not good for you or the dog.

Labradors can be really wonderful guard dogs if properly trained because they can be very protective of their human family, and also they are intelligent enough to know the difference between a threat and someone who is simply visiting. So they can be friendly with the visitors you want, and can alert you and protect you if someone is prowling around.

My mother has 2 labs. One will bark the other won't. My neighbors lab never barks unless she wants to play with my dog. Some do and some don't. I have kids and 2 dobermans, they make GREAT pets and house/family protectors and they're more calm than a lab and don't shed as much either. they love my neighbors but when they come outside my dogs will still give a couple barks to let me know they are there. But I'm bias...good luck.

Labs can be very defensive of their "people," but they are generally very good natured, and much more interested in making friends than in being a guard dog. They do have a loud bark, and that can keep people away. This is from my personal experience, I owned a Lab for seventeen years, and she was the sweetest girl, but her loud bark stopped many people from getting near our house if we weren't home. Of course, she probably would've only licked them to death if they got in....Have a great day!

We had a golden retriever that came in between my mom and a man that was going to rape her in our home, so yes they can be good guard dogs.

With training, sure. Generally they're big teddy bears. I am teaching my Golden Ret. to make a snarly face and growl when I make a particular hand sign. He looks and sounds very intimidating. Which should be, has been a serious deterrant to those afraid of 80# worth of dog. (he's got a Huge, big dog bark too) You could try contacting your local police K-9 handler for advice. Grrrrrrooooood luck!!

Yes, if you train them. Most will lick an intruder to death rather than attack. I have a golden and he is very protective of the house and property, although his bark is worse than his bite. But since he does weigh 110 lbs, most people who don't know him are very intimidated by his size, especially when he is barking at them.
