The problem with allergies to animals is that it is often not the hair you are allergic to. It can be the dander or (more often than not) the saliva. So the supposedly hypoallergenic breeds such as poodles, soft coated wheaten terriers, and the hairless breeds can actually still cause allergies. However sometimes allergies lessen with frequent exposure to the allergen...

Can't really suggest a particular breed but I hope you won't rule out certain breeds just because they are very hairy. You should try a patch test to see exactly what it is you are allergic to- hair, dander or saliva- and then progress from there.

They all can cause allergies. The hairless chiwawa is a good idea. The one problem is they go outside and they bring pollen in with them. I suggest you invest in a very good (not cheap) air machine and use it in your home and bedroom. Bath the dog often about 2 times a month. They can get dry skin if done too often.
I have found dogs with "wire" hair not to be too bad.
If your allergies are just real severe you may not be able to keep one. Another thing is when you get one. From the get go never let him on your bed and furniture. I do mine, but it will keep him from your sleeping area. If they don't learn it they will not care.

If you go to www.dogbreedinfo.com you can view a list of dogs recommended for people with allergies. Once at the website, click the "All Breeds" tab at the top of the page, then click "Want more search options?" about halfway down the next page, then select "Allergies" and you can browse their list. Be careful though, some of the dogs listed there are not true breeds. They are those mutts that people call "designer" breeds although they aren't breeds at all and many of them have lots of health problems, including their own allergies. The vet I work for recommends poodles (any size), bichon frises, and schnauzers (any size) to most people that ask your same question. Good luck!

There've been some great suggestions on the list, but first you should know if your allergies are just to dander or if they are also to dog saliva. If your allergies are also to dog saliva, it's going to be really hard to find a dog that will fit, although you might be able to adopt an adult from a purebreed rescue, if you could find that it didn't lick. This source Web site provides some really good information for owning a dog if you are allergic.

I would check with your doctor, and see if possible what you are specifically allergic to. If it's dog dander, then you should stick with a short haired dog, that doens't really shed. But some people are just allergic to dogs in general, and you don't want to deal with that. And the smaller the dog, the better. Less mess, and less exposure to hair

My best friend has a little dog with longish hair and they say it doesn't shed a lot. My dog has short hair and it sheds a lot! so maybe dogs with longer hair dont shed as much. Kind of ironic.
