Every time I work on my '81 rabbit diesel and my '84 jetta diesel, my hands get so black. When I work on the other vehicles, my hands dont get so black.

if you are talking around the engine it is normal because of the ash in the Deisel fuel burned.If your talking about the engine oil the same reason applys and greese comes in many different colors

Can't be any worse than an old classic air-cooled vw, which there pretty bad. Just need a can of GOJO Orange Pumice Hand Cleaner and it'll get it off : http://automotive.gojo.com/products/product.asp?cat_id=20

diesal burns alot dirter then gas , as far as grease they are using a heavy duty grease when they lube it , works good in warmer climates

dumb question,the older the grease is the more black it become!!!!
