My cat has been laying around quite a bit for the last three days. He is not eating his food or drinking a whole lot, but will eat table food and grass. I have noticed that he hasn't used his litter box as much. So is it possible he could be constipated?

yes, cats can get constipated, I know last time it happend it cost me $150 in vet bills for an xray and an enema (had to sedate him for the xray and the enema)

my vet gave me some laxatone to give him once a week. I've also heard to give cats a table spoon of pumpkin pie filling once a day every day. also put some mineral oil in their water. (if you use a pet fountain I wouldn't recomend doing that but in a regular water dish maybe in the morning fill it up and put a little bit of mineral oil in it and then in the afternoon filling of the water dish don't bother as with the evening filling of the water dish.

not sure that I would recomend this one but cats are lactose intollerant so maybe give him some milk.

Though I would recomend a vet visit to make sure that it isn't an obstruction in the intestine if he got some string or something else he shouldn't have that might need surgery to get out.

Cats eat grass to help with stomach pains, I would not feed him table food, that's what the problem might be. I would feed him some wet food, that usually helps them use the potty. Kittens have more constipation problems than adult cats but wet food should help with either. Does your cats have a hairball problem, sometimes when cats have hairballs they get really sick, they won't eat and they will lay around so if that is, they sell over the counter medication for it or hairball control formula food. But as you know taking him to the vet will be the best you can do. I hope your kittie feels better soon.

One thing a lot of people don't know about cats...any cessation of eating or drinking is a *bad sign*! Cats will go into kidney failure, develop "fatty liver disease", and go downhill quickly, even after just a couple days of not eating/drinking. While it's not a serious issue in humans or dogs, you need to take him to the vet for a blood work-up. Maybe it is just constipation, but it could be an intestinal blockage or worse. So please...get your cat to the vet ASAP.

Yes, cats can get constipation. Table food is not all that good for him (no cooked food is, actually); but loss of apetite, in itself, is a sign for alarm. Talk to your vet on the phone at least, or even take the kitty to the vet (and possibly a sample of his stool in a ziplock bag), just to be on the safe side.

Table food could cause constipation, because there are many things in it that cats cannot really process properly. Unlike dogs, cats are not omnivores.

Please take you cat to the vet as soon as possible. He needs to be checked out. Cats are constant eaters and drinkers, and he may have a problem with constipation or it could be something else. One of my fur babies acted like this for a couple of days a couple of years ago and it is a blessing that I didn't end up losing her. She was lying around in a similar fashion, not eating as usual, and I took her too the vet and her kidneys were shutting down and she had actually started to go blind because of the kidney problems. This happened in less than 48 hours. She actually had suffered from a stroke, which had messed up her whole system. She had to have medication and I had to feed her this super vitamin and mineral paste like food substitute for a few weeks. She had actually gone from being nearly seven pounds to a bit over four pounds in that time period, so that wasn't helping her health either. She has some motion problems to this day because of this ordeal. Take your cat to the vet or the emergency 24 hour animal hospital, if you are lucky enough to have one in your area; as soon as possible. Best of luck to you and your buddy.

There might be more to his problem than just constipation. Not eating or drinking, lying around, having trouble going to the bathroom...all signs that something might be wrong. Take him to the vet and get him checked out. There are laxatives for cats your vet could recommend if your cat is constipated.

Canned pumpkin is good to use for constipation as it adds volume to the stool. For the same reason it also can help with diarrhea.

Do not use the pumpkin pie FILLING, however as it has sugar and spices that are not good for the cat. You can also bake some winter squash, mash that up and add to wet food.

sure it is. there are two products in a tube from a vet office or a pet store. one is a malt flavored laxative paste and the other has a fish flavor. some cats like one or the other. u just put a dab on their nose and they lick it off and it helps make hairballs pass, etc. if it is too late they may throw up the hairballs if they are bound up with them. if this does not work, better take kitty to the doctor. good luck.

yes, it is possible for a cat to be constipated. I had one of mine get constipated last month...and the vet had to give her an enema (she did not like that one bit!)
take your cat to the vet as soon as possible...and hopefully they won't have to go through that!

DO NOT LISTEN TO THESE PEOPLE DISPENSING ADVICE WHO ARE NOT TRAINED!!! You need to get the cat to the vet... it is your responsiblity to take care of the animal as it can not get there on it's own. Be responsible and get the cat to a vet... it could be a bowl obstruction which can kill your animal. Be kind and get going to the nearest clinic.
