There is only ONE GOD!

You can approach this in several ways:

1) If you consider religion to be a purely humanistic endeavor, the names of God are as numerous as there are people in the world. In other words, the idea of God originated in the mind of man, as a means of assigning purpose to existence, and to create a system to explain things that humans have yet to understand about the universe. In this interpretation, therefore, the different religions gathered together people with similar ideas of the nature of God and the eternal.

2) From a more spiritual standpoint, the various "incarnations" that you list are simply different aspects of God. In that sense, all religions are "correct," in that their view of God or of a higher power is colored by their culture and societal mores. Same God, viewed from a different side. One could also say, in this interpretation, while all religions are correct in that they approach God, that no religion is 100% correct, because they view God only through their own cultural filters -- it's why a lot of Christians even today see God as an old white guy with a beard, and Jesus of Nazareth looked like the long-haired member of a modern rock band, not like a Jewish man who was born on what is now the West Bank and lived his life in the Middle East.

Unfortunately, each religion thinks it has the ultimate truth of things, and reacts (sometimes violently) to any other ideas of how the universe works. I'd read up on Joseph Campbell for more on comparitive religion.

Thank you, Ted. Religion has been the driving force of history, because religion has made so many turns in it. You would have to study religious history for years, and I mean YEARS, to get a broad and hopefully unbiased understanding of what came from where, because all religions borrow from each other in some way, and hopefully you won't become acrimonious when comparing. Jesus and Moses, Mohammed and Moses, etc... and that's just a tip of the iceberg for branches of Judaism. Let's try Jesus and Mithra. That's more interesting. Look on the Yang side, or the bright side, at least you have a large variety of salvation to choose from (Yang is from Yin and Yang, Oriental metaphysics influencing Persian Dualism, with then infuenced Judaism and Christianity into believing in Heaven and Hell, God and Satan, Good and Bad). I wonder if the writer of Revelation consulted with the Native American Indians who also used the four colors, the numbers 7 and 12 and horses in their religious symbolism?

This is the Genealogy category. You got 12 answers in 6 hours. If you posted in
Home > Society & Culture > Religion & Spirituality
You would get more answers. I am not the category police. I hate to see people asking for fish from the fruit vendor.

The acrimony comes when different people with different opinions will not admit that there may be different viewpoints.

This is one of the best explanations of why God allows pain and suffering that I have seen. It's an explanation other people will understand:

A lady went to a beauty shop to have her hair cut and
her nails painted and trimmed. As the lady began to work, they
began to have a good conversation. They talked about so many
things and various subjects.
When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the
beautician said : "I don't believe that God exists."
"Why do you say that?" asked Sheryl who has MS.
"Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that
God doesn't exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so
many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God
existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a
loving God who would allow all of these things."
Then Sheryl thought for a moment, but didn't respond because
she didn't want to start an argument. The beautician just
finished her job and the customer left the shop. Just after
she left the beauty shop, she saw a woman in the street with
long, stringy, dirty hair and
not groomed at all. She looked dirty and unkempt.
Then Sheryl turned back and entered the beauty shop again and
she said to the beautician: "You know what? Beauticians do not
exist."
"How can you say that?" asked the surprised beautician. "I am
here, and I am a beautician. And I just worked on you!"
"No!" Sheryl exclaimed. "Beauticians don't exist because if
they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and
be very unkempt, like that woman outside."
"Ah, but beauticians DO exist! What happens is, people do not
come to me."
"Exactly!"- affirmed Sheryl. "That 's the
point! God, too, DOES exist! What happens, is, people
don't go to Him and do not look for Him. That's why there's so
much pain and suffering in the world."
If you think God exists, send this to other people--If you
think God does not exist, delete it!

God didn't have any incarnations, because he didn't exist. Men made religion which conjured up incarnations and other nuisance. The equation is simple really: no God, no incarnation, hence no religious acrimony.

after the creation of human beings in the evolutionary process AdiShakti (the shakti of Shiva )sent 10 gurus(incarnations of Adiguru Dattatreya the devine guru (prophet) at different times to establish 10 religions on to this earth for variety. These gurus are Confucious,Laotse,Socrates, Abrahim,Moses,Zorashtra,Nanak,Mohammad,Raja Janak&Shirdi Saibaba. These Gurus preached THAT GOD IS ONE AND WE ALL ARE HIS CHILDREN.Religious acrimony is the product of narrow minded human beings &religious clerics for their selfish interest who lack the knowledge of devine vision.

i think as god created various forms to his entertainment so we created many forms/incarnations for our entertainment but god never did injustise in between them for he has created them he cares them equally. But we humans have forgotten that basic thing. So we see its present result.we should understand that god is one with any incarnation then only our enimity between other religions will end.

Because different cultures used a godlike figure to answer different questions that related to their lives. People with different needs created god-figures that would fulfill those different needs. Thus the different "incarnations" as you called them.
