How are hot dog buns cut?

I mean: if you take a layer of buns out of the package there are 4 of them. Each one is split (or sliced) part way through, but there is a bit of bread attaching all of them together, and the slices are all in the same direction. I can see a knife or blade slicing the end ones part way through (but the slices would be in opposite directions) how do they get at the middle ones.

Did that make any sense?

There are no middle ones. They come in fours and then they are packaged on top of each other. As the buns go through the machine, a group of 4 of them go through at the same time because they are connected. A blade cuts them at both ends which means that all of them are cut. Then depending on if there are 4 in a pack or 8 or 12 buns in a pack, they'll take those groups of 4 buns and place them on top of each other. The buns that I've seen all have the cuts on the outside of the bun so the cuts are facing the outside of the package. If you have buns whose cuts face the inside of the package, then I don't know how those get cut. if they're all connected together.
