Jack Russell's are actually somewhat an aggressive breed. They are cute, but sometimes not so cuddley. He/she may be staring as a way to dominate or could be trying to get attention for one reason or another. These dogs were bred to hunt rats and other rodents. Rats are very aggressive in defending themselves, the Jack Russell has to have an attitude to this. I would simply maintain eye contact and stand up over him/her then point to the door and say "out" in a very firm non wavering tune. Eventually, he will understand this means stop staring and leave the room. Very important if you are eating and he does this, do not let him stare at you while you eat. The key is to get him to leave the room or even move to another spot, lay down and stop staring. Never break eye contact when you are issuing this command. Believe it or not this command establishes you as boss and dog as friend, but not leader. Also, get him lots of toys to chew and destroy. These dogs though not big, they are mighty and need lots of stimulation. Good luck

Jack Russell also known as Parson Terriers were bred in England by a guy to be a fox Hunter not a rodent Hunter! Yorkies were the ones created to hunt rodents! There is a huge and important difference 1 is that rodents make smaller holes in which Jack Russells would not fit into and the whole reason is to get rid of the rodents so Yorkies with slightly collapsible rib cages fit in these holes to get the rodent where as Jack Russells were designed to coax out the Fox for the hunter much like a lab or hound except that they could fit into the Fox holes. Jack Russells do not stare incessantly as a sign of dominance they will stare as it is their hunter instinct. They do need boundaries as they tend to follow up the stare with a poke or nip. Staring them down doesnt work like with other dogs. OBEDIENCE SCHOOL IS IMPORTANT these are very smart athletic working dogs who should always be kept busy or they cause trouble. A é é sound then putting them out of the room works best for staring

Perhaps a better question would be: Why do you spend so much time staring at your Jack Russell?

If a Jack Russell Terrier stares at you, he is thinking that you would be tasty, crunchy and good with ketchup. ;)

Just kidding. Terriers are very pack oriented breeds. He probably considers you his pack master and is looking at you for signals. Since they are usually hyper by nature, he'll focus on you for what to do next.

Dogs who want to display their dominance do it with a lot of body language such as posturing (standing stiff legged with their neck arched and their head up), leaning (over the neck and back of another dog), and staring. If your Jack Russell stares at you, he is challenging you for dominant status.

Maybe because he needs to go outside. My Siberian Husky will go to the sliding glass door whenever she wants to go outside. If I'm in another room and don't notice her sitting by the door, she will come into whichever room I am in (I have a home-based business, so usually I'm sitting at the computer), sit down next to me, and just stare at me. This is my hint that she wants to go outside.

He's probably just making friendly eye contact and is interested in you. Why shouldn't he be?

it is waiting for you to give it some attention. either that or it thinks you look funny, but i'd be willing to bet that it's the first one.
