Carpet or hardwood floors?

It depends on what you like. Carpet holds many germs and some people are very allergic Hardwood looks beautiful and so does carpeting. Both require a lot of cleaning. If you have any sort or allergy or have a pet, I would recommend hardwood floors. You can always use throw rugs that enhance your rooms to pick up the colors of your drapes and furniture. Hardwood used to be the in thing and then shag carpet was the in thing and now, hardwood is featured everywhere. Go with your instinct or buy a 8 x 10 rug and see how you like it and if you don't, then go with hardwood.

Because it is much easier to clean, and you can shop for darling area rugs to accentuate a room or concept you wish to have, whether permanent or on a whim, you would have more flexible options the next time you're in the mood to Re-Decorate.
** Besides, you get to shop for Cute House slippers too, for those days that are chilly enough to warrant wearing them.
Well if you like cute, my boyfriend buys the house slippers, they are whimsical and purely for fun as well as comfy. Guests always have a laugh at them, and delivery people always give us funny looks - they're fun to wear.

Carpets are,... Well once they get stainded, its a major pain in the behind to get all of it out. When you do get the notion to redecorate, you're either stuck with the carpet and your options are limited by it, or when you do have the carpet changed, it involves moving everything out of the room or the house, to expidite the removal of the old carpet. Also if there were an act of nature, like a window blowing in during a rainstorm you often forget about the carpet, until it starts to mildew and stinks up the whole house. Then you're forced to remove it before the whole house is contaminated, which is bad - especially if you get attached to that carpet, even worse if you can't get more of it from the original manufacturer.

**There is a new fangled contraption called a Roomba - I think it is a robot vaccume, you just turn it on and let it roam around the room on its own, My mom wants to get us a few so that it can do the regular dusting/cleaning of the rooms with our hardwood floors, as well as the rooms that also have carpeting. I forgot about the cleaning and maintenance aspect of having a home. I'm considering getting a smaller place.

When in doubt, go with hardwood! Hardwood has never been hotter! Its like asking wallpaper or paint, you know there is only one true option! Hardwood will increase your houses value and can easily be cleaned. In a couple years the carpet will look dirty, and will have no appeal! Hardwood adds charm, go for it!

Hardwood floors are my favorite. It is much classier looking, and goes with any decor style and color. You don't ever have to worry about your wall, couch, etc., matching your floor as opposed to carpet. They are so much easier to clean (especially if you have little ones and/or pets). Hardwood increases the value of your house should you ever decide to sell it. Also it is easier to convert, if say someday you would like carpet you can always install it over the wood floor.

It depends. Where do you want to put the carpeting/hardwood?

If it's in the living/family room, then carpeting might be better, for comfort. But, hardwood is much better for people with alergies, so that's something to consider.

Both have their pros and cons:

Carpet: Pros include price ($30-$40 per square yard); ease and speed of installation; you can change it when it wears out; it adds sound insulation to a room.

Hardwood: Pros include durability (real hardwood, properly installed, can last 100+ years with only reapplication of the finish); value it adds to your home; beauty; cleanliness; ease of care.

Hardwood (and I'm referring to old-fashioned 3/4" real wood) should be installed by someone with experience, to ensure a good fit. To buy material, install it and finish it, a professional will likely charge you $11 or more per square foot, making it almost three times as expensive as carpet. But, done well, you'll never replace it and hardwood never goes out of style!

And, it's so easy to clean. I have around 2500 square feet of hardwood flooring, and I can clean every bit of it in 15 minutes or less using a Schmop (do a Google search for this tool). It's like a large Swiffer, but it comes with reusable terry cloth covers. I damp mop with this, and I get beautiful shine. And, I disagree with a comment above--hardwood is very durable for kitchens if they are well sealed with a durable polyurethane (go for 4-5 coats of poly).

Ultimately, the decision comes down to preference and price. Perhaps you'll find a compromise!

I have both and it looks quite nice...all hallways are hardwood and the rooms are carpeted. Planning at a later date to put hardwood in the familyroom

My dad has bad knees and heels. He's Surgeon told him carpet with good padding is best for him to walk on. They have both in there home, when he's walking on the hardwood or tile he has to wear REALLY GOOD running shoes.
