I have a little bichon frise who is around 8-10 years old and generally in good health. he has never really been ill. howevere on tuesday night he took two seizures back to back and was very disorientated and dazed for around and hour afterwards. he then took another one the next day wetting himself in the process. we took him to the vets who prescribed a barbituate drug to try to control the seizures.
but he has another this morning so the vet increased the does to the maximum possible dose. the seizures are quite full on and he is so disorientated afterwards for up to an hour. then he comes round but sleeps alot.
he isnt even his normal little character, its so heartbreaking to see. I am just scared we may have to put him to sleep if they continue as it really would not be ethical to have him suffer like this.
we are goin away on monday and he has to go to kennels for 6days. has anyone else had the same problem and did your dog get better and seizures stop? it would help to hear

2 years ago, my dog had seizures out of the blue. immediately, we took her to the vet, & after various blood & urine tests, princess was given some medications.
however, it didn't work, and for the next 2 days, the seizures worsen.
i took princess back to the clinic, & the vet recommended this >>>

please ask your vet if it's worth the try. my princess' seizures stopped after the 1st (half) pill. no kidding.
i wish you all the best! i know how heartbreaking you feel & to see her suffer, salivates & whine involuntarily.
i hope you'll let him stay with you, instead of going away for the next 6 days. he needs you.
alternatively, bring him along with you?

Bichon Frise Seizures

I'd be concerned about leaving the dog in a kennel just now. It can take a while to get the correct dosage of anti-seizure medication worked out. Our family had a dog that took the medication for several years, and rarely had a seizure during that time. The breed is somewhat prone to epilepsy.
Here's some information for you.

My dog had seizures, too. Although not as frequently. You want to take your dog to the vet to have bloodwork done and see about putting him on Phenobarb. This should help lower the frequency. Its normal for him to be disoriented after the seizure. My dog would be dazed for about 1-2 hours after and then "POOF" she would get up and be ok as if nothing happened! stinker! get him to the vet for bloodwork though. thats the first step and also, remain calm when your dog has the seizure and talk to him. he can sense that you are there and will have an easier time if you are calm.

It may not be a permanent problem, so don't stress until all the necessary tests have been done. On the other hand, if it is a permanent problem, you may have to put him to sleep. If his seizures continue to be as often and intense as you say, putting him to sleep may be the best. Seizures can be caused by many, many different things. I think that the best advice is ought left for the trained professionals to decide.

Your little friend may very well have epilepsy. Maybe you need to find a vet who specializes in this. My dog had it and she lived many healthy years with it, but in the end it did take her life. I'm sorry that's not very uplifting to hear, but if you get the right treatment, your dog can probably have some time left. As for going away--don't do it! You'll be so sad thinking about it, you'll be miserable!

it takes a lil while for the barbituates to get into his system thats why the max dose from the vet to get as much in his system as soon as possible..i would see if you could board him with his vet instead of the kennel though they at least have knowledge of his seizures and know how to handle it

all the best to ya,,,

it does take a few days for the drug to fully be effective. if it was me i would keep trying wait and see what happens. i also would suggest to put him in a kennel ran by a vet's office so if something does happen while you are away he will get help right a way. if that is not possible make sure you stress to them the importance of giving him his meds. good luck

this dog needs to go to the vet. my sister's dog, a poodle and golden retriever mix, has seizures and is on medication.

you can't leave this dog in a kennel and not tell them--they should not take ther dog without asking many questions

the vet needs to take a blood test and make sure the medication is right

If the medication isn't working it would be better to put him to sleep before you go away. That way you don't have to worry on the vacation or spend more money. Really you should take him to the vet and go with what the vet says.
