I have not studied the subject however, if I had to guess I would say that its a term of endearment. Most people don't just start off calling you that. In school (elementary) for example your teacher would do some form of role call on the first day. What is one of the first things that they say? Is there anyone here who goes by another name or a nickname let him/her know and then they always jot it down. After a few years it kind of sticks. This may not be best answer worthy, but maybe its a fresh perspective on an old question. Toodles Les!

It is meant to be a more personal call to you. People who are close to you are comfortable with you and use names that are more intimate, including shortened names. It seperates those you know from those who don't know you well enough.

Ever notice how you don't have people you JUST met use it, or when people introduce you they don't say "this is Les". And it's not just a shortening; In other languages, they make it longer. -ito or -ita is added in some Hispanic cultures because it makes you cuter or sweeter and more childlike (smaller literally) and becomes more personal to you. Like Charlie... my English friends give me Char, and my Spanish friends sometimes call me Charlita.

Nicknames that aren't necessarily shorter here: Cedric gets Ceddie (2 syllables the same), Jaime (to me) gets "Hi-May", Lindsey gets Lindsler.

I don't think it's laziness, it's intimacy (not always sexual kinds).

I think the truth is, people are getting so stupid they can't think past one syllable. I hate people shortening my name and even more so when I keep correcting them. If someone tells you their name, don't call them anything else. Simple. Don't turn it around on the person giving you their name just because of your inability to repeat it back.

Its less formal and conotes a degree of familiarity and affection as it is a name called often. The inverse is true. The longer your name the more likely it is a formal and tense situation. The longer the use of your name the deeper the sh*t you are in. Example: The People of the State of California v. Charles Miles Manson

i think often names are shortened when we or our family members have difficulty pronouncing them as babies/toddlers. this pattern becomes habit and we start to shorten names of others even when we can pronounce it.

my name is angela and most of my family calls me angie. i prefer angela (it's such a beautiful name), but it doesn't really bother me to be called the other. however, for me i also find shortening someone's name is like a pet name or term of endearment. i am always taken aback when someone i don't know shortens my name to angie. it's almost like i feel they don't have the right to do that without my permission. in turn, i also notice that i tend to use a shortened name only with people who introduce themselves as such, and with people who are close to me or i feel very fondly of.
