I have been talking 2 this guy now for about 3 mos.We are no where near serious, however, seemed 2 be trying to work on getting to that point.Last week he was on the verge of a nervous breakdown dealing with the possibility that he could be bi-polar and have OCD.I tried 2 encourage him and be supportive, like a good friend would. I tried 2 be a listener and offer support in whatever way I could. Yesterday, I had the day from hell. I proceed to tell him about my day and all he could seem 2 do was critizise my behavior and thougts. I wasn't telling him about my aweful day for him 2 be critical and analyze all I did wrong. I just wanted him to listen as I did with him and try and be supportive. We ended up getting off the phone in a "huff" and I haven't spoken 2 him since then. He usually calls every morning and today he did not. Should I call him and ask what the F#%^ is his problem, or just let it be? hy do men lack the ablility to empathise? Does he really have the nerve 2 be mad at me?

Men don't lack the ability to emphathize... immature guys do. And this guy clearly has some growing up to do.

However... men do often have a tough time with the "just listen" thing, because their nature is to try to fix problems. But this guy wasn't being a fixer, he was just sniping at you. Move on.

Hah, and I've been told I'm TOO sensitive. I think you should back off a little from him. If he has bi-polar disorder then his moods will change dramatically and erratically. You said he was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Perhaps he is just a bit overwhelmed with the recent events with his health and inexplicably channeled his rage towards you. Give him some time.

Oh, and it's not just men that lack that ability ;)

Three months and not anywhere near serious. No nookie? No wonder he is going nuts.
Yesterday, you had a bad day and he "owed" you a good supportive venting, but instead he cracked and commented on the annoying self-centered personality traits you have a problem with in your relationships with co-workers.

Men do empathize, and are sensitive. Watch men watching football or boxing. There are all kinds of emphatic expressions like "Damn, that hurt".
Get over yourself, put out or shut up and leave the poor dude alone.

Men dont appear to women as having much ability to sympathize becuase men dont usually have very strong verbal intimacy skills. They are doers not talkers. Leave him alone and let him be, he needs to deal with his own problems and grow up a lot. Also, just a thought, do you really want to be with a guy with so many emotional problems? I mean relationships are hard enough without adding serious disorders like bi-polar and OCD. Just think twice and be very careful.

No he doesn't. Men, unlike us women seem to be naturally analytical- we are emotional and creative. Maybe you should just call him, tell him that the two of you dont have a lot in common if he is unable to lend an "un-judgemental" ear. And then.....let him stew.
