The LDS Church recently sent out a mandant from their "prophet/council" that no male is to be left alone in a room with a child even if he is assigned to be their teacher. That would be a volunteer - sunday only thing. Not the same - but similar in that a major religious org making steps to insure the protection of themselves (legally) and children (emotionally) in that order.
I've had to get a police background to qualify for a regular job that didn't come in contact with childen. I think it's a good thing.
Here's a point for Aussie's

Background checks are done with most jobs these days. While still in high school, a friend of mine had to pass a check and get finger printed before she was able to work an after school care program. "Lax hiring practices" would be the first thing to come under scrutiny if something were to happen to a child. Unfortunately in this day and age, it's a necessary procedure which still doesn't guarantee we'll weed out all of the sickos.

I haven't had one done on me yet, but when I apply to be a part time substitute at my Alma Mater I will have one done. So long as you haven't committed a crime against children or been arrested for drugs and alcohol, I wouldn't worry about it

I've had a full FBI check on me, including the interviews of my references, but that was because of a job I held.
I didn't get to see the report, but if there was anything bad in there, I wouldn't have been hired.

This does not prove you are not a child molester, just proves you might not have gotten started yet, or caught yet.
