My mother is Catholic and my father is Atheist. I know, what a comination! When I was growing up, I was always told by other kids who fould out about my father that he was going to Hell. I was raised by both of my parents to search for my own religion. . . which is how I truely believe children should be raised. My father has always been a good man, and the funny thing is, he knows more about religions and the bible than anyone else I know.

Most people (subconciously) are terrified of what is different than the majority. . . wether it be an atheist or premarital sex. If it is different than what they believe, it scares them. Which is why they threaten Hell upon the "sinners". It's almost a way of "washing" their ears. It is said more for them than for you.

What should you do? Well, this depends greatly on why your "friends" are saying this. I always told my peers that before they judge what others are doing, to be sure they know what their own religion says. The book of Mathews says to not pray in public for all to see.

Matthew 6:5 "When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I assure you, that is all the reward they will ever get. But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to you Father secretly."

Just beat them at their own game.

I had a friend like that. I told him I was looking forward to it, but I wouldn't be staying long, because the Greek Pagans idea, Hades, also wants me. As well as the Goddess of the Underworld in the Norse religion, which her name happens to be Hel (only one L). A few others would like to send me to their idea of hell too, and I figure since I will have eternity, I should be able to cover them all.

Nothing, it is god who decides who goes to heaven and who goes to hell. Many of those who think they are going to heaven might be very disappointed when they arrive in hell.
