Using word perfect 12 how does one place a symbol?

I would like to know if I can place an a or d etc.above a word in a sentenance. I can fnd symbol but can't figure how to use them. Like in a song a chord changes in the middle of a word. how do Iplace the Symbol over the top of it?

I'm using an earlier version of WP, but here is what I got by going to "Help" and clicking on "superscript":

to create subscript or superscript text,

1 Click Format Font.
2 Click Position, then select Subscript or Superscript.
3 To return to normal text, click Format Font Position, then select Normal.

There is also an "overstrike" choice under Format/Typesetting if you want the new letter over top of the exixsting one.
