Many of the options presented to you so far are semi-expensive. I've found that Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment (Lip Protectant/External analgesic) works like a charm. It comes in a little white tube with a red line on it and costs about 4 dollars or less at your local drug store or shopko, or whatever. What I do is right before bed, I it on all over my lips and then put extra onto the cold sore. When you wake up in the morning, it should be minimal at worst...good luck!
