I have a doberman/german shepherd that I got when he was 6 mos old. I have had him for over two years now, and he's still very 'jumpy". He's a wonderful dog, and I love him to death, but he still runs and hides if anything goes wrong. If the cat knocks something off the table, Sampson will head for the bedroom, just in case he's in trouble. I always know that Sammy had nothing to do with anything that happens - because, the always looks at the other animals as though - you're gonna get it when she finds out - sort of way when they are up to something. I guess whoever had him as a pup must have beat him severly for just about anything and everything. When people come to visit, it will take him hours just to let them extend their hand, and if they tried to pet him - off he goes - to his bedroom! I don't mind it too much, as he's great with me & my husband and that is all that matters to us. I wouldn't trade him for anything, and I am happy knowing that we are giving him a much better life than the person who first had him did. If you really want to tackle your dogs issues, first take it to a dog training class where there are other dogs and people. It will be good socialization (my Sammy hates a trip to Petsmart - that is pure torture for him). Or ask your vet, as they do have a drug you can administer to the dog, kind of like a doggie valium. It keeps them calm and relaxed, but does not dope them up. It's caled Calmiqualm (close any ways), and it is an antianxiety drug for dogs.

Your dog may have issues for the rest of his life. All you can do is give him love and understanding, and HOPE he will be able to pull himself out of it. Sometimes it takes a long time.
Try socializing him with other people. Take him on walks to the park. Carry a pocket full of dog biscuits (or some other favorite treat). When you meet someone who shows interest in your dog give them a treat to give to HIM. The more he is exposed to people who DON'T try to hurt him the more he will realize that not ALL humans are bad.
GOOD LUCK!!

Yes they can. I got my dog from a shelter for abused animals and he would not bark or look you in the eye and every time a door was shut he would go and hide. It may have takin awhile but he just had to learn that he didn't have to be afraid.

I did the wrong thing and babied mine. We stood away from the door she would go to her crate and out the door. We could not get near her till she was 1 1/2. She is now 2 1/2 and we got her when she was two months. She had to be dumped out of the carrier. Her sister was the same but not as bad.
When Tonya sunbom's puppy mill was taken down they were going to have to put all the dogs in Grant county shelter to sleep because hers were needed as evidence. We cleaned out the shelter !!! As they came in day to day with no room for them they called us and we would get them so they didn't get euthanized. She was no more than 8 weeks and didn't spend 24 hours at the shelter but she has yet to "grow" out of it?? I have no idea what could have happened I think its just her. Poor breeding??
My mom still gets a kick out of Lillie coming to see her. You can't reach out for her but she will sniff you and even let you put your face by hers but no hands. She goes in her crate whenever there is company and everyone gets a kick out of saying her name because she just growls at them. She is certifiable
My daughter and I managed to bathe her and now she won't let us brush the under coat out and she really looks crazy. I mean the wind blows and she has this high pitched squeel and blowing her coat she could be used for a horror movie. She is always so pretty because no one ever touches her. I screwed her all up.

You by no ability understand, watch her progression and be certain what you suspect is ultimate for her. If the vet can supply soreness meds, that would help to take a seat down back her if it won't incorporate her gadget. I assurme that the vet has taken x-rays and observed no different harm. issues can exchange nonetheless, so possibly that's fairly useful to take her back in for extra x rays to rule out swelling. I want you and your canines the very ultimate. You reported that she is eating, ingesting and not incontentent and those are very solid indications. could be a piece of the therapeutic technique.

Well.. It "ain't" gonna be easy. I have one right now.. she is NOW 17 years old but when I picked her up at 2 years old.. she had been BADLY abused by her owners.. whipped, hit, etc. It was so bad that if I talked loud... if I coughed... if I sneezed, she would run and hide. She is better now.. not completely over it but much better and she started getting better about 4 or 5 years ago.. so.. they can but it takes time and lots of love and "tender lovin care"....

some yes but some are just to traumatized, plus some dogs are just more nervous than others ,you can get Cd's of loud sounds like cars and stuff which you play really low then over time you slowly play them louder this gets the dog used to them slowly without even knowing it.
