I woke up this morning with a strange pain in my chest. It mostly hurts when I take a deep breath. It almost feels like very sore muscles around my rib cage, but I haven't done anything to make them sore. I've pretty much just been lounging around the past few days! My family thinks I may be having a panic attack, but I've never had one before so I don't know what they're like. I have been diagnosed with depression, but at the moment there isn't anything that's bothering me that may even cause a panic attack. Anyone ever have a problem like this??? And by the way I am only 21, I do smoke but not that much. Should I call the doctor now or should I wait to see if it passes?

ok now i'm scared! Nightspotter mentioned something about pleurisy so i looked it up to see the symptoms...they are exactly the same as what i'm experiencing!!!!

"The hallmark of pleurisy is severe chest pain that starts suddenly. The pain is often strong or stabbing when you take a deep breath. It usually subsides or disappears between breaths. It's usually felt on one side of the stomach area or lower chest. Deep breathing and coughing often make it worse. You may also have a fever, pain when moving, or fast, shallow breathing. Typically, you will be able to point to the exact location of the pain. In some people, the pain spreads to the neck, shoulder, or abdomen. "

The questions we ask when we are called out for chest pain are pretty simple. On a scale of 1 -10 and 10 being the worst pain you have ever felt, how would you rate your pain? Where does it hurt? Is the pain local to one area or does it radiate? Describe the pain, is it sharp, dull/throbbing, crushing, only hurt when you move. Now, given your age, I doubt you are having a heart attack, but chest pain is never anything to play with. Do you have asthma? Did you sleep in an odd position before the pain started? What makes it worse or better? It is very hard from just what you said to know what it could be, but it sounds like you probably slept wrong or pulled something if there is nothing else causing the pain. If the pain is constant and hard to tolerate, go see your doctor.

hey hun. I wouldn't wait to see if it passes. I used to have pains when i inhaled but they would go away. One day I had the same pain but it didn't go away. My lung collapsed. It's the worst thing in the world. i was hospitalized for a month and had to have surgery more than once. I didn't even smoke at the time. Just get it checked out. It never hurts to be cautious. Good Luck!

You could just have a rib out of place. It is easily fixed with a trip to a chiropractor. I work for an osteopathic doctor who does manipulations like a chiropracter (Except he's got an actual medical degree) and he popped one of my ribs back in last week. There was immediate relief.

I think it may has to do with your smoking or depression. Depression does have physical symptoms too. I'd wait for a couple of days, and if it hurts, call the doctor. Anyways, use your own judgement.

Any type of chest pain should be taken seriously. Just to be safe, make yourself a doctors appointment and tell your doctor EVERYTHING, he will tell you if you need any test etc. ANY smoking is bad and can make you suseptable to heart disease, which is the number one cause of death in women, not breast cancer, especially because our risk factors are higher than those of men. Take care of yourself.

panic attack symptoms usually are, shortness of breath, feeling anxious, nervousness, shaking, tightness in the chest (usually around the sternum), that sort of thing. if you are still sore tomorrow or if it gets worse, you might want to ask your doctor.
