I think some of you are misunderstanding me. My rottie does get exercised 4 times a day. He then comes home, runs straight to the back door to be let out there to do poop. He will wee when he's out on the lead but refuses to poop. One person who answered my question was rude which was unnecessary. I am seeking genuinely helpful answers, not ridiculous ones!

All dogs have a favorite spot to do their business and unfortunatly he's chosen your garden, there isn't much you can do, unless you restrict access to the garden, then he'll have to learn to use other parts of the yard.

Sorry no one took you seriously the first time. There are a few things you can do here.

One you can put up a small fence around the garden to keep the dog out.

What i found with my dogs was they pooped in the garden because we get wild rabbits who eat stuff in the garden and the garden always smells like wild animals.

If your growing any fruit or veggies the rottie is just adding some fertilizer. Another option you have (not practical) is to move the garden to another part of the yard that the dog doesnot like if you do this and he still poops there its probably from the smell of other animails that travel in you r garden. Best of luck

Like I said, you can train him to go on one spot so its not all over the yard. But in any case you should clear it up as soon as he does it so its not a problem for your kids.
You could also try training him to go on command. Then try giving him the command to go when you're out. You start by giving him the command you want to use every time he goes. Eventually he'll associate going with the command.
You have to put some time and effort into training a dog. Its like potty training kids, it doesn't just happen overnight.
Sorry you thought my answer was ridiculous, but I have over 20 years experience training dogs. I gave you what I thought was the easiest option.
Heres an address where you might get more help.

Has the dog been punished for pooping in someone's yard while on walks? Perhaps while walking him, you or someone else have made him feel guilty or bad for pooping in someone else's yard, so he has made the distinction that when he's on the lead, he shouldn't poop. Maybe try taking him around on the lead just in your backyard at first, and when he does poop, praise him lots! Then when he gets the hang of that, take him for walks and praise him when he poops in someone else's yard (and be sure to clean it up afterwards!).

That's the only thing I can think of right now. Sorry I can't be of more help!

My dogs didn't like to poo while on the lead. Also, they never poo unless prompted on the way out for a walk, only when we turn around to go home.

Everytime our dogs pooped we repeated the word over and over, now, if we're on a walk and we tell them to 'do your business' or 'poo' they do if the have one ready! (sorry to be graphic).

Perhaps you could try this sort of association? Otherwise try waiting until your dog has pooped before taking him for a walk. After a while his body will have adjusted to the new timings and you can comand him to poop at the beginning of the walk.

Dogs will continue to go in familiar spots. They like to return to spots that smell like them. The only way to stop this is to find a way to remove the smell.
My suggestion is to fence in your garden, or find some other way to deny your dog access to it until the smell dissipates (which could take quite some time as dogs have an acute sense of smell).
The other thing you can do is consult your Vet. He may have some suggestions for you. You don't have to bring your dog in, they SHOULD be able to give you some answers over the phone.
GOOD LUCK!!

I used to have this problem, my Lab would not poop while on her leash, so I used to run with her to get things loosened up and sure enought she would poop. Not sure if your rottie runs during his outings but maybe this will help?

Good Luck.

the dog has become accustom to doing his business at one location its trained basiclly probably by accident to poop out in the garden it most likely pooped a few times in the past and got mega praise or maybe a treat and now it thinks thats the bathroom. you need to retrain... good luck

Isn't this a good thing? When I had my old Rotty (bless him) he used to crap ANYWHERE that took his fancy. Anywhere outdoors that is. I had to have a constant supply of those little plastic bags to pick up after him all the time. It was worse when he had the squits.

You should be thankful he only goes in one place.
