Essentially I want to know what goes on when a person speaks in tongues. Do you speak in faith and believe they are tongues? Do you essentially just say anything and have faith that it is tongues? Is there actually words to speak loudly impressed on your mind?
I am aware there are christians that say it comes by the Holy Spirit, I just want to know what happens when it comes. What are you thinking at the time somewhat
Any other way?

thankyou

Does the answer change depending on who is asking the question? I assume most people check profiles, after all it isnt that hard. You should keep those judgmental attitudes to yourself so as not to look foolish, as you now do. Go read proverbs.
every one I am an atheist asking for your honest answers. In order to get an honest answer, If you must , pretend your answering to a christian. (Thats not needed for some christians I can see already in the answers posted)
thankyou

Tongues is a gift from God not just for Pentecostals, but for every Christian.

1 Corinthians 14:26 says ...EVERYONE of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

Acts 2:38-39 says, Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
For the promise is unto you, and your children and to all afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call."

While speaking in an unknown tongue, you do not know what you are speaking. It is a heavenly language that God understands. No man understands. Not even Satan. When you pray in tongues to God, Satan doesn't understand so he can't interfere. Satan does however, understand English, Greek, German, etc. But he doesn't understand tongues.

1 Corinthians 14:2 says, "For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries."

What you are actually searching for is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Pray and ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. He will. You can experience God.

In Acts 2:2 it describes the first infilling of the Holy Spirit. these people were already saved and they waited on God. Suddenly a mighty sound from Heaven as a rushing mighty wind and The Holy Spirit filled the house where they were sitting. They He appeared unto them tongues as of fire and sat unpon each of them. Then in Acts 2:4 it said they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

When this happend. People who watched this happening thought they were all drunk. Peter had to dup and let them know they were not drunk, He told them, This is that that which was spoken by the Prophet Joel. In the last days God will pour out his Spirit upon all flesh...Read Acts 2: 14-21.

It is for you today too.. Ask God to fill you, He will.. It is a wondereful experience and it makes you a stronger christian. Builds up your faith. You can use your gift daily... see Jude 1:20.
God bless.

sometimes i hear what i am saying i think alot of it is if you are actually speaking in tongues or you are faking it, many christians dont speak in tongues becuase they feel it is too extreme, but it says in the word to be baptized in the holy spirit and part of that is being given the ability to speak in tongues, as i said before it is a flow of God not just some jibber jabber like people think it is. It is a biblical part of christianity, many people choose to remove it from the word because they think it is an extinct part of the word but it has been done for generations since the original first time. Speaking in tongues necessarily doesnt translate to english or as simple call it meaning something, it is the spirit filled ability to pray in many languages at one time, to the person above take the bible how it is written dont delete parts to make it fit what you think christianity is, that is a problem with many christians today. Thinking you can change the word to how you think it should be. But thats not how it is the final word is the biblical message of God.

Its not learned, its not premeditated - the words just flow. It is the Spirit of man speaking to God (who is Spirit), and unless the speaker is given the gift (from God) of interpreting this marvelous language (various languages sometimes), the speaker usually has no clue of what's being said.

Certainly in some cases there have been people who fail to understand this wonderful gift of tongues and babbles. Unless someone is doing something obvious, its not ours to correct them or say they have not spoken in tongues.

Some have ignorantly believed its something you teach others. Before I actually spoke in tongues myself, I have had people try to TELL me what to say.., some would say, "repeat after me.., say.., tah-tah-tah - lah-lah-lah..," which even I questioned as Authentic and not from god but from man!

When I first spoke in tongues it came as a surprise! It was when I was baptized - and as I came out of the water - I heard someone blabbering away and it sounded like right next to me. As I looked around, no one was that close and no one was speaking in tongues. It took me what seemed like a couple of minutes before I realized this was coming out of my own mouth! THEN I really got excited - as God gave me first hand experience of such a thing that until then, had thought was pretend.

I hope this helps you to understand. NEVER let someone tell you to repeat speaking in tongues after what they say - or you cheat yourself from a very REAL and dynamic experience from God.

This promise is to you and all who are willing to accept the infilling of the Holy Spirit, and you must believe it is true. Without faith - you will get nothing. [read Acts 2:38]

They are utterances given to you by the Holy Spirit you dont think of them they are just given to you and spoken through you. I've been told the feeling is like a fire within the belly, but does not hurt many people speak tongues at our church, and I think it is awesome! Such a cool feeling, it gives me holy bumps! You have to really be intune with Christ to be given this gift, and desire to have it.

The Holy Spirit Speaks using your organs of speech. The words come out, but I do not know what I am going to say, and yes, it is a language.

What's the point of speaking in tongues if nobody benefits from it? Use the multilingual gift for God and spreading the gospel. Since when is using one of the gifts of God that selfish?

I am christian,
no one should speak in tongues anymore.
The whole point in biblical days was that someone could understand it and it carried a message. Now it is simply mumbling, their is no point to it anymore.God put a stop to it in the bible, but certain christians refuse to believe it saying they are overcome with holy spirit.
