A surgical center. Many have a few operating rooms and they only do surgery there. It is not a hospital though some are associated with a hospital. It is a little more comfortable then the hospital as usually it is not as overwhelming. Ambulatory just means you come and go after you recover from the anesthesia. If you need a big operation like a hip replacement with a hospital admission and some physical therapy you would not have the surgery at an ambulatory surgery center. As a podiatrist I do foot surgery at an ambulatory surgery center and the patient arrives an hour before the surgery and leaves after they are stable from the anesthesia. The patient follows up in my private office then.

It's a place to have surgery that doesn't require overnight stays.
