my german shepard who is 1 was hit by a car... took her to the vet and xray showed that she has a shattered pelvis... picked her up yesterday and the vet said she would have to have surgery. The cost of the surgery is around about 3,000. does anyone know if most animal hospitals would do financing or if i have to have the money upfront.... the vet also said that sometimes they heal on their own.. is that true? i dont want her to suffer anymore than what she has to... thank you... any advice would greatly be appreciated in this matter! have a great day!

Call your vet and ask about financing.

Then, call around to ALL the vets and ask what they would charge for the surgery.

Be sure to look into the life your dog will have after surgery. Will he be able to walk at all? Will he need a cart to pull his legs?

Call the pound and local shelters, tell them about this. They may be able to lead you to the most affordable vet.

Good luck, sorry about your doggie.

well I have good contact with my vet and I always refer new ppl so my vet would let me finance. I would try to get another opinion dont always choose the first vet that says it costs that much. The xray might show that he has a shattered pelvis but it may be cheaper elsewhere. Ask your vet about some pain medication maybe it is not so serious that it has to be fixed right this instant. My chow and sheppard mix has hip dyplasia and he was born with it he takes pain pills and some days are worse than others but it would cost me 600 to fix and I dont have that kind of money but all in all I would get a second opinion. Good Luck!

If you can locate a Vet School close by, they perform such surgeries on animals, at about half the cost. Also, most Vets will let you make monthly payments. They do not like to see an animal suffer. Like your Vet said...it may heal by itself but that is not likely to happen. Make sure you keep her as comfortable as possible and give her either baby aspiring according to her weight, or adult 500 MG aspirin. You Vet could have given you a pain medication. Just watch her closely and good luck.

You'll probably have to do some looking around. Call different animal hospitals in your area before you decide on where you take her. If you live in or close to a city I'm sure you'll be able to find alot of different hospitals and find one that will work with you to get the surgery done and set up some kind of financing program for you. If that fails you might have to go to the bank and take a loan out, like for a car, and pay on that with interest, I know this sucks, but you shouldn't let your girl suffer.

Good luck and I hope your dog gets well soon. :)

All you can do is call the available clinics in your area and see what it available.
I would not put her to sleep, though if the Vet told you there is a chance she could heal on her own. Just keep her as still as possible as this can be a VERY dangerous injury. If she moves around too much the shifting bones could knick or sever major arteries causing internal bleeding.
It is always a good sign if she continues to eat, drink and go to the bathroom on her own. You MIGHT want to ask your Vet if he could give her an antibiotic if you decide NOT to have the surgery.
Watch for bloody stool.

Yes they should finance. You will have to have a hefty sum upfront. They don't like to extend it to far out but the will work with you.

You said "shattered" it won't heal on its own. Maybe if it were fractured and maybe even if its broken but "shattered" there would be no way if its in pieces.

If he is referring you to a veterinary surgeon to do it then I would at least take the referral and see the surgeon. They are going to give you the best advice that they have. Board certified (and make sure that the person they refer you to is board certified surgeon) vets are busy people. They (99.9 % of them) won't do surgery if they don't need it. Ask for all your options, and be honest with what you can do from your end (financial, aftercare, etc)

I'm sorry for your difficulties.

i would go to a medical shelter and ask for donations. even a flyer will help.

i have 20 teddy bear hamsters
1 dwarf hamster
2 gerbils
and i have a dontion stand which i have probably made 900 $ this summer.!

but if you cannot find anyone to help i would personally put the dog out of its misery.

not to be mean but it would kind of be mean to put him through pain.

good luck i hope he heals by himself, i think the can but then after they heal they will need surgery to relocate the pelvis.

some times teaching schools will do surgery at reduced cost to allow the students to gain experience. They are supervised by a vet but no guarantees that it will work.... good luck

Call around to different places. Many vet offices will do some sort of financing and will let you make payments.

Sorry to hear about your pup. Hope it all works out.
