Even though Islam makes fundamentals very clear as Monotheism and Final Prophethood of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), there have been numerous sects unfortunately.

Most of them have been made due to political reasons. For eg, the Shia sect was made due to political reasons.

The other sects have been made by heretics of islam that have an intention to destroy the islamic unity. Most of the Christians and Jews have started studying the QUran for destroying the islamic unity. then They enter islam, inculcate false believes and mis-guide the people. Then they form a separate sect calling themselves 'Muslims'.

THere are some sects that follow the main Quran and Prophet's tradition. They vary very slightly in performing the worship and prayers. And more likely are united. Thats UNity in diversity.

all of them believe in the Quran and one God.

however after Muhammad(P) death. Islam has been divided. first are Sunnies which are the majority of muslims, then Shia which major group is in Iran, some in lebanon, Iraq, and random numbers around the muslim world. then there is wahabi and those are little strict group living in Sudia Arabia. then Ahmadi and they believe that there is another prophet came after Muhammad and muslims don't see them as true muslims, as the Quran clearly says that Muhammad is the last prophet. then Sofi and they mostly use songs during their prayers and have their own way. dorsi and i don't know much about them.
