I've done quite a bit of research on this, but results are conflicting. It may be 1953, but my vague recollections seem to suggest that young men born after 1953 could still be drafted into the Vietnam War.

Nixon made the Army an all volunteer Army while I was in. I think that was 1972, so that would make the last draftees 1954. I can't remember what month.

Thae last actual "Draft lottery was held in 1972 for the men born in 1953. My number was 365. but I had already enlisted in Navt to stay out of Vietnam. Ended up 100 miles of the coast llaunching aircraft. How's that for Luck.

draft ended for the Vietnam era in October 1976. last combat troops left in 1972. that would make 1955 if entered service as a 17 year old. draft would be as you said 1953.

it could be 1954 -- 18 years old in 1972.

Except he wasn't drafted, he fled to Canada to avoid the draft.
