Most people would choose to be doing something else than going to the dentist but we are a necessary evil. And most of us are quite nice. I try very hard to treat all my patients like they are family and do treatment for their best interest. I have had good and bad dentist personally and most of my opinion of them had to do with their personality. I treat a lot of kids and adults and have been recommended to other adults by kids. So I take that as a good sign. I expect that people don't want to come see me because of what I represent and I try to keep it quick and easy for them. Sometimes it's not quick or easy but as long as they know I care and trust me then they are okay. If you go to the dentist and you don't like it, maybe find a new one that you like better. There are tons to choose from, each with different personalities and ethics. Good luck!

PS The fact that the guy quoted is erroneous. The fact should read that dentists have the highest suicide rate among professionals. At least it was that way about 5 years ago. Maybe another profession took top spot. I'm not feeling suicidal though so that's good. They say it may also be due to the high rate of perfectionism among dentists. The patients can't appreciate the perfection because they can't see their teeth to know if it was a good job or not! So maybe they would have committed suicide even if they chose another profession. Who knows???

Good luck! I hope you only have good experiences.

I love going to the dentist, mostly because they are great guys and they pay me to be here.

Yesterday, I had to have a crown done, so I was in the chair. It was a perfectly comfortable experience, didn't hurt at all, even the numbing shot. I seriously wonder why some people fear/hate dentists so much. They keep our teeth healthy and pain free so we can eat steaks when we're old.

To the person who said this: "who enjoys the dentist.. i hope no one does. Dentist have the highest mortality rate... so they sure don't"

I can't find this claim backed up anywhere, and I've looked. I wonder where that idea comes from?

Well have only been told twice today that a patient hates me so that higher than average.

You must remember than dentists are not deliberately trying to hurt you.

We are not the ones who put the holes in your teeth in the first place!

Dental decay and gum disease are two totally preventable diseases!

PS I have had 4 patients say how much they like coming into my surgery which is lower than average.

PPS To the high mortality rate point. Dentists are in high risk group for alcohol and drug abuse( for the alcohol, last figures I saw were that only publicans and airline pilots had a higher rate!) and have an extremely high suicide rate.

I used to hate it for years.... But I finally found a dentist that I liked with a sense of humor and a great personality who would back off and try something different anytime something hurt...

That made it much better... But I think what finally got me to the point where I even enjoy going to the dentist was when he hired a dental hygeinist to do the cleanings that is an absolute doll.....

Who could possibly enjoy the dentist? Did have an interesting experience once though - I hit the floor hard but cushioned the impact with my face, causing my top teeth to be bent backwards. I was preparing myself to say goodbye to the poor fellows but went to an emergency dentist. He grabbed hold of my teeth and merrily dragged them back into position (I was expecting them to break off at any moment). I was left curious, amazed and with a mouth full of blood and weird gooey stringy bits. Different, but I've made a point of avoiding any face/floor conflict, and can't say that it was exactly enjoyable.

i was ok with the dentist until i had my first filling (pretty bad for an 8yr old)... i was quite looking forward to it until they shoved the drill in my mouth and drilled into my gum! twenty years on and i'm still scared, but my dentist always reassures me and i still get a lolly! so it's a bit of both, but think what state your teeth would be in without em!

I love going to the dentist. The people at the dentist office are very nice and they know my entire family and ask about them every time I go in. I've been with my dentist since 1989.
