Doesn't MAKE you stupid - but can make you ACT stupid!!!
Seriously - there is some truth in the "use it or lose it" idea - but is really more about being sharp and practiced. Your innate intellectual ability won't change (unless you fry your brain on drugs or alcohol that is) - how efficiently & easily you can use it and access it etc. can be impacted by what you do.

The TV most definitely makes us stupid. The video games? It depends on which game you play. Some video games can sharpen problem solving abilities (quest type) and also exercise the hand-eye coordination. BUT you need to go out and walk around and do different things and not sit and play games all day long!

I think it partly depends on what you're watching. In general, I'd say yes, because TV is all stimulus. People want entertainment and if it doesn't hold their attention they just find something that will. Whereas reading, research, exercising, doing a hobby, all of those help develop a person. TV and video games have some potential advantages if used correctly, otherwise, it's a source of entertainment, not always a bad thing, but a bad thing if viewed incessantly.

It seems likely since it has been shown that there is a link between TV watching and Alzheimer's disease. Video games should not be detrimental though because they keep the mind active. If you Yahoo! search "TV, intellectual decline" you will find an article linking daytime TV viewing with intellectual decline in the elderly

I don't think so. But it's not good to set and do nothing but eat and play games. Everyone needs exercise. That's the biggest problem with obese kids these days they do nothing but eat and set on their butts in front of games and TV. My stepson doesn't want to come out of his room except to eat and use the bathroom. He isn't interested in anything that doesn't involve games or TV. We have to make him go out and play to get him off the things.

On the contrary, with all the wonderful Discovery programmes on nowadays, children of ten know more than I did when I was twenty in the early 1960's. Information (quality information, that is) inproves intelligence beyond imagination. Long may it continue..............
